Korean musical heads to theaters

“The Man Who Laughs” is set to become the first Korean musical to be screened in theaters.

Producer EMK Musical Company announced Thursday that a film recreation of the stage musical will screen in 17 theaters nationwide, including Megabox Coex, beginning on Nov. 28.

The screening comes as part of the “SAC on Screen” and “Classic Society” initiatives, headed by the Seoul Arts Center and cinema franchise Megabox, in an effort to share high quality cultural content across Korea and screen arts performances in theaters.

“The Man Who Laughs,” based on French writer Victor Hugo’s novel by the same name, is set in 17th century England and revolves around the character “Gwynplaine,” a kind-hearted man who has a distorted face.

Performances of “The Man Who Laughs” will be staged from Jan. 9 to March 1 at the Seoul Arts Center’s Opera Theater in Seocho District, southern Seoul.
