Fly Gangwon begins service with a Jeju flight

Fly Gangwon is aloft, making its first commercial flight on Friday.

The new budget carrier began operations with a service connecting Yangyang, Gangwon, and Jeju.

Fly Gangwon received its business license from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport eight months ago, along with two other discount airlines: Aero K Airlines and Air Premia. It was the first of the three to commence operations.

The Yangyang International Airport-based airline operates two flights a day between Yangyang and Jeju. The low-cost airline started taking reservations Wednesday.

According to the airline, 10,000 people visited its reservation site in the first half a day, and some weekend flights were immediately sold out.

The airline set its one-way flight fares at between 63,400 won ($53) and 101,800 won, excluding surcharges and airport charges, depending on the season. It is also offering a 10 percent discount to Gangwon residents.

In a special promotion, the airline is offering one-way tickets between Yangyang and Jeju at 20,000 won total for Gangwon residents leaving on a weekday this month. For those departing on weekends - Friday, Saturday and Sunday - the price goes up to 30,000 won.

For Gangwon residents traveling next month, before Christmas, one-way tickets are offered at 30,000 won on weekdays and 50,000 won on weekends.

The budget airline is also preparing to offer international services starting next month.

“Beginning with a route to Taiwan next month, we will start offering flights to the Philippines and Vietnam from early next year and continue expanding our flight destinations,” the airline said in statement Thursday.
