Job numbers strong in a second quarter report

Another strong jobs report has been released by Statistics Korea.

In the second quarter, the number of wage-earning positions rose by 464,000 from the same period a year earlier.

The agency said in the Thursday announcement that the total in the April-to-June period was 18.7 million, with 12.6 million jobs maintained, 6.1 million jobs created and 2.43 million jobs lost as companies went out of business or restructured.

The statistic is different from the regular monthly job figure, which counts self-employed jobs, such as people working at mom-and-pop stores.

As with the monthly report, most of the new jobs went to people 60 and above. In this category, the net increase was 228,000, nearly half of the total.

In the 40s age group, 26,000 jobs were lost.

The government has expanded its elderly jobs program as the population ages. It hopes to create 640,000 jobs for the elderly this year and 740,000 such jobs next year.

By sector, health care and social welfare job numbers rose by 162,000 from the previous year to reach 1.94 million. Many of the elderly jobs are in this category.

Health care and social welfare accounted for 10.4 percent of the total 18.7 million jobs, a rise of 0.6 percentage points from a year earlier.

While most jobs were manufacturing jobs - 22.5 percent in the second quarter - that was a 0.6 percentage point drop from the same quarter a year earlier.

A total of 165,000 jobs were created in the government and non-incorporated organization category, suggesting that the government led the hiring increase in the second quarter. Incorporated companies created 109,000 jobs.

More women also found jobs.

According to the agency, there were 338,000 more women with jobs from the previous year, compared to 126,000 for men.
