‘In the Absence’ added to Oscar list

The short documentary film “In the Absence” by director Yi Seung-jun was chosen as one of the 10 possible candidates in the short subject category for the upcoming Oscars, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed on Wednesday.

The film, which runs for 29 minutes, centers around the day that the Sewol tragedy occurred, with clips and phone records which indirectly question the nation’s role in failing to save hundreds of innocent lives.

Other candidates include “After Maria,” “Fire in Paradise,” “Ghosts of Sugar Land,” “Walk Run Cha-Cha” and more.

The final nominees will be announced on Jan. 13.
