단테는 케르베로스가 지키는 그 탐욕의 지옥을 묘사하면서 각자의 권력을 결코 놓으려 하지 않는 이탈리아 피렌체의 정치가들을 염두에 두었다고 합니다. 자신이 한 몸뚱이인 것을 망각한 채 각자의 욕심으로 으르렁대는 혼돈의 세상. 13세기 작가 단테는 지옥의 모습을 자세히 설명한 뒤에 의미심장한 말 한마디를 덧붙였습니다.
Dante Alighieri said he kept Italian politicians who always wanted to seize their power in mind when he described the circle of Gluttons, the third circle that is guarded by the Cerberus. He also tried to show society that greedy people growl at each other without realizing that they were all one.
