MBC to end 20-year-old ‘Section TV’

Television network MBC announced the end of its 20-year-long entertainment program “Section TV” on Friday. The exact end date and which program will air in its place have not been decided.

The celebrity news program premiered in May 1999 and is one of the longest-running entertainment shows on the channel.

But as online news and social media grew in popularity, news-based entertainment programs saw their ratings drop.

The departure of the 35-year-old program “Entertainment Weekly” on KBS last month signaled the end of an era for such programs.

According to industry experts, the prevalence of smartphones has had a major impact on the needs of the audience.

The show’s ratings remained at an average of 2 to 3 percent in the second half of this year.

Korea three main broadcasters - SBS, KBS and MBC - have attempted to revive their respective programs by content renewals but ultimately failed to do so.

“E-news Exclusive” on SBS is now the only remaining entertainment news program on the country’s three major television channels.
