Lining up in front of a shoe store overnight to get a limited pair of kicks isn’t a rare occurrence for passionate shoe collectors.

While scarcity has long driven fashion customers to make purchases, a new consumer behavior has emerged in the fashion industry: sustainability.

Increasingly, people have become more concerned with protecting the environment, and that has played out in the fashion industry as well, especially among consumers of fast fashion who find themselves buying and dumping a lot each season. Many are looking for sustainable ways to stay fashionable yet minimize the damage caused to Mother Nature. The Samsung Design Net said in its forecast of the 2020 fashion market that “reasoning” is the key thing that drives one to make a purchase. It doesn’t matter if a certain fashion item is rare or trendy; people have to be able to justify their purchase against their own standards to be able to take their wallet out at a store.

One fashion item that’s leading the way in terms of providing environmentally-friendly options is footwear. Many sneaker makers are starting to use items like recycled plastic or even beans and seaweed to make their products.

One of the most eye-catching companies making sustainable sneakers is the French brand Veja. The brand, which was established in 2004, makes the shoes from ingredients found in nature. It gets its rubber from rubber trees in the Amazon, and gathers coconut fibers or other organic materials to make the final product. Some recycled plastics are also used, as well as fish skins.

The cost to make a pair is about five to seven times more than other popular shoe brands. To keep prices affordable despite the high production costs, the company has minimized its commercial spending. It doesn’t advertise widely about what items they use, yet consumers, one at a time, discover the brand while shopping. Currently there are about 1,800 stores in 45 countries, and the company sold 550,000 pairs of sneakers in 2017, making 22 million dollars (25.6 billion won) in sales.

Converse also uses thrown-away plastic bottles to make sneakers. It uses recycled polyester to make a line of products called Converse Renew Canvas. It collaborated with recycling company First Mile to gather plastic bottles from developing countries, melt them to produce thread, and use that thread to weave new shoes. It also used old pairs of jeans to make denim sneakers in October.

Reebok is in the process of making vegetable running shoes. The body is made from Eucalyptus trees and the midsoles are made from caster beans. The liners of the shoes are all made from different types of seaweed and natural rubbers. Caster beans are easy to cultivate with a very small amount of water, and when compared to other ingredients in general, the processing of the bean cut carbon emissions by 30 percent of what’s normally seen with other ingredients. By developing more natural ingredients, the company aims to minimize the use of plastics made from petroleum.

Nike has also used little pieces left over from the production of running shoes, and put that into the midsole of its ZoomX Vista Grind products.

Adidas is taking a different approach. While many companies opt to recycle plastics or go for more nature-friendly ingredients, Adidas has decided to make recyclable shoes. After one is done with their shoes, they can return them to the company, who will break down the shoes into small pieces and then use the pieces to make new pairs of shoes. Basically, once you buy the shoes, unless you throw it out in the trash, they can remake the shoes over and over again.

The shoes, which are scheduled to officially come out in the spring of 2021, are currently being tested. The recycling is possible because the shoes are made from only one material without any glue.
