Jumping right into ‘Gatsby’: The immersive musical encourages audiences to get involved in the show

A small stage sits right next to a piano, close to a bar filled with Champagne and cocktails in a place called Gatsby Mansion on the second floor of the Grevin Museum in central Seoul. The nearly 100 people who came out to see the musical “The Gatsby” were standing around inside the place decorated to look like Jay Gatsby’s home listening to the piano performance.

In the middle of people talking and drinking, actor Ma Hyun-jin entered the room as if he were part of the audience. He took off his coat right next to the stage and mingled with the people that were in the room. His first line comes while he is still rubbing shoulders with the guests.

“I have something to say,” he said, and then the spotlight engulfed the actor, playing Nick Carraway. This is how the so-called immersive version of the musical starts.

Suddenly the audience becomes the guests of Gatsby’s luxurious house party. Characters from the original novel come in holding a glass of drinks, talk to the audience casually and even teach them how to dance. When Gatsby comes out and talks to Carraway, the audience focuses on what they have to say and even follow them to other rooms as they move. Some follow Gatsby to hear what he has to say to his lover Daisy, while some others follow the other actors to different rooms for different stories. The performance continues, and everyone gets to watch different scenes depending on who they follow.

Immersive performances became popular in New York City and London in the early 2000s. One of the major shows was “Sleep No More,” which is based on a story of William Shakespeare’s “Macbeth” in a New York hotel. The audience was invited to walk around and watch the production, which took place in over 100 rooms. The style done by the British theater company was widely welcomed in New York City, and the company moved on to meet the fans in Shanghai, where the show is still in production.

In Korea, attempts at immersive performances began in 2010. The trend experienced its heyday for the next two to four years. Since then, there have been many experiments done by theater experts working in central Seoul’s Daehangno, widely known as a district that puts lots of independent plays, musicals and theater pieces. In 2018, there was a performance that had four themes, and the audience chose what they wanted to watch from the options available.

“The Great Gatsby” is an immersive performance experiment that was cultivated overseas. This particular performance was first presented in 2015 in York, England, and then traveled to London, Ireland and Belgium before getting to Korea for its run until Feb. 28.

Hartshorn-Hook Productions, which made the musical version of “The Great Gatsby,” has been pivoting to change itself as a company that produces more immersive theater pieces.

An immersive performance of “The Great Gatsby,” which was first released in Britain in 2015, has actors and performers sing right next to the audience members. Some people come dressed similarly to the styles of the actors to participate more actively during the show. [MAST ENTERTAINMENT]

The Gatsby Mansion, where the performance is done, is about 1,322 square meters (14,230 square feet), and can host up to 200 guests at a time. Organizers of such immersive events can’t make as much of a profit than they would by doing a more traditional stage production and therefore invite a lot more people to watch the show at the same time.

In order for immersive performances to be financially successful, the shows need to encourage attendees to return and bring more people. According to the show’s organizers, about 50 percent of the audience has to come back to watch the show again.

The key factors of these immersive performances doesn’t stop at taking down the unseen boundary between the stage and the audience seats. The main difference is that each performance can be very much personalized and different depending on how active the audience is and how spontaneous the actors are.

The audience may not know the entire storyline even after the performance is complete because each actor tells a different story, and that may result in people missing the bigger picture. However, each audience member gets to leave the show with a memory unique to their experience.

To ensure that the performance you are watching is fun, you need to be active in replying to the actors’ questions during the show. Gatsby asks the audience members who follow him to his library what they would do if they had a large amount of money and even asks for tips on how to set up a luxurious tea party with Daisy.

When the actors include the audience, the show feels more like a conversation, instead of feeling like you are watching them recite memorized lines. When this reporter joined the performance, the audience members who were asked to say something in front of others did not get shy about acting a little for the performance.

“It is different now from the past when people were shy and wanted to leave when they were called to come up on the stage,” said Kim Seon-hwa, a director for the Korean version of “The Great Gatsby.”

“Now young people enjoy being in the spotlight amongst other audience members and even contribute much in making the dramatic flow of the show.”

About 48 percent of people who attend the show are in their 20s, and about 26 percent are in their 30s, according to the producing company. The demographics aren’t too different from other musicals in the city, and it is evidence that many people want to participate more in the show they are watching.

At some performances of “Sleep No More” in Britain and the United States, the production company has audience members wear masks so that everyone can feel comfortable to step up and participate. In this case, the audience members don’t watch only the actors perform but also get to see how everyone else acts in response to the show.

How welcoming the audience members are for “The Great Gatsby” will be the deciding factor of whether more immersive performances become available in Korea.

Audiences are encouraged to come wearing designs that were popular in 1920, the year the musical is based on, and about 10 people were dressed accordingly. The production company said there used to be no one dressed up, but now about 10 percent of people come to the show decked out in costumes and props to match with the actors.

Amie Burns Walker, a co-director of the performance who visited Korea last month, said the best way to fully enjoy immersive performances is to facilitate a conversation during which the audience members can share their different experiences after the performance is done.
