‘Parasite’ storyboard book becomes best seller after Oscars

Sales for “Parasite: A Graphic Novel in Storyboards” surged upon Director Bong Joon-ho winning four Oscars, according to online bookstore Aladdin on Monday.

In the six-hour period after the start of the 92nd Academy Awards on Monday, about 350 books were sold. The book’s average sales per day during the week prior was 15.

Kyobo Bookstore reported a similar upturn - until Sunday, the book’s average daily sales was 10. At 5 p.m. on Monday, the bookstore reported that it had sold about 350 books, 35 times more than the average sales.

The book features the film’s script and storyboard, both written by the director, along with interview excerpts. It also includes scenes from “Parasite” that were cut during the editing process.

The hand-drawn storyboard by Bong is the most impressive part of the book, which is the very first “plan” of the film that the director made, straight from his imagination.

“In a way, these are my personal moments and a record of the loneliest part [of the filmmaking process], before they become a film through passing the trial of the entertaining chaos of the film set,” Bong explains in the book.

As of today, “Parasite: A Graphic Novel in Storyboards” is the only book about “Parasite” available at local bookstores. Consisting of 448 pages, it costs 37,000 won ($31).

봉준호의 '기생충 설계' 담은 책, 판매량 35배로 뛰었다

아카데미 4관왕 영화 '기생충' 관련 책의 판매량이 급증했다. 10일 온라인 서점 알라딘에 따르면 지난해 10월 나온 단행본 『기생충 각본집 & 스토리북』(2권) 판매량은 아카데미 시상식이 시작된 오전 10시부터 6시간 동안 약 350권이 판매됐다. 이 책의 지난주 평균 1일 판매량은 15권. 이날 하루에 23배로 뛴 셈이다. 교보문고 판매량도 늘었다. 인터넷교보문고에서 이달 9일까지 판매량은 하루 평균 10권. 10일 오후 5시까지의 판매량은 350권으로 35배가 됐다.

이 책은 봉준호 감독이 직접 쓴 각본, 스토리보드, 인터뷰로 구성돼있다. 기생충에 대한 봉 감독의 계획, 영화에서 편집돼 볼 수 없었던 미공개 장면 스틸 컷도 포함한다. 특히 어린 시절 만화가를 꿈꾸고 대학 시절 학보에 만평을 연재했던 봉 감독이 직접 그린 스토리보드가 인상적이다. 종이 위에 그린 그림은 스태프ㆍ배우를 통하기 전 단계 봉준호의 '기생충 계획'을 보여준다. 봉 감독은 이 책의 내용이 “어찌 보면 내가 가장 외롭고 고독할 때의 기록이자, 촬영장의 즐거운 대혼란을 관통하기 이전의, 고요하고 개인적인 순간들”이라고 본문에서 설명했다.
현재로서는 유일한 기생충 관련 책이다. 펴낸 곳은 플레인아카이브. 국내외 독립ㆍ예술영화의 블루레이, DVD, 도서, 음반을 기획 제작해왔던 곳이다. 448쪽. 3만7000원.
