Marronnier Park is usually packed with passersby and part-timers trying to coax them into watching a play in theater-heavy Daehangno area in central Seoul. However, these days, the park is empty and quiet.

The coronavirus is hitting the theater district hard as well, especially the productions targeting children and young students. Many theaters have made cancellations over the past week. One theater production company president said that over 1,200 tickets were canceled in the past week, all of which were group tickets. Some ticket offices have closed all together as the theater has essentially shut down.

Parents are leading the wave of ticket cancellations. Myeongjak Theater, where the popular “The Three Little Pigs” was being staged, decided to temporarily close due to a lack of demand. An official from the theater said it is not certain when the theater will put their creative works back on stage.

Another play that usually attracts students in group is also seeing fewer people in the audience. One production company president said he usually saw about 40 to 150 youngsters from schools or welfare centers in the audience for their productions, but requests from those groups are no longer coming in. He added that ticket sales in recent months are about 10 percent of their average sales, and this month is close to zero. The production company has decided to cancel 50 performances that it had originally scheduled for February.

The situation is not much different for shows that target adults. One comedy show that is normally staged four times a day decided to do only two performances a day. Yet seats are still empty.

“We have prepared masks and hand sanitizer, but people don’t come to see any performances,” said another theater production company based in Daehangno, adding that the company only saw about one-fourth of the audience they usually have at each show.

Some ticket holders made complaints about the shows not being canceled and having to pay fees for giving up their seats.

With fewer people visiting theaters, many actors are now worried about how they are going to support themselves. Actor Park Yo-han, who’s been working for the past two years, said he might have to look for other part-time jobs to support himself. He gets paid each time he completes a show, and his show was canceled three times in one week.

Ha Ji-woo, president of The Theater, a performance space with 100 seats, said it may be difficult for him to afford rent this month. He had to let go of four of his staff during the Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) outbreak in 2015, and he is worried that he may have to do that again.

Many theater industry experts said that the current situation reminds them of the large financial damage that theaters had to deal with back in 2015 with the outbreak of MERS. At the time, many small theaters and small production companies saw cuts in their sales, and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism stepped in to inject 50 billion won ($42 million) into the sluggish theater industry.

“If the virus continues until the end of this month, that means anything scheduled not only for March but also for the first half of the year could be disrupted,” said Choi Yoon-woo, director general of Korea Small Theater Association.

For now, the Culture Ministry and the Seoul city government are focusing on preventing the virus from spreading. As part of that prevention plan, many theaters in the Daehangno area will be sterilized once a week.
