HYNN reaches the high notes, and more: Hitting a G sharp was just the beginning for the talented balladist

Although karaoke rooms today are shut down or nearly empty due to the pandemic, they were always a popular form of entertainment for the wannabe singers stopping by to belt out the songs of their favorite artists. But for fans of ballad singer HYNN, that might not be an option. Few vocalists would be able to hit her high notes.

HYNN, born in 1998 and whose real name is Park Hye-won, debuted in 2018 with single “Let Me Out.” Her single “The Lonely Bloom Stands Alone,” which wasn’t an immediate hit when it was released last March, climbed to the top of the music streaming charts when the song went viral online through video clips of the singer’s busking and live performances, in which the singer’s capacity to hit high notes drew gasps of wonder from the viewers.

The songs on her album “When I tell you goodbye,” released on March 31, detail what the singer has gone through over the past year after she found herself in the media spotlight.

“A lot people are expecting to hear high notes for this album, so I scaled up to G sharp [which is even higher than in ‘The Lonely Bloom Stands Alone’],” the singer said in an interview with the JoongAng Ilbo last Tuesday, which was the day of the album release. “What’s important as much as my ability to sing high notes is to be able to express my emotions as well [in the songs]. I had to practice more strenuously [to put both elements in the album]. But I also didn’t want to strain my voice, which meant that I had to take even more care [than usual].”

Although she was gifted with a voice to sing high-pitched notes, her ability to flexibly climb up and down the extremely high notes was the result of years of practice. After graduating from School of Performing Arts Seoul, she was admitted to the department of applied music in Dongduk Women’s University.

“I became a lot more diligent after the shock I received after I flunked the performance test in my music class when I was in 10th grade,” the artist confided. “[Every time I sing], to get the right tune, I practice tuning my voice for 20 to 30 minutes. Whatever song I sing, the most important thing is the tuning, which is the very basic element [in songs].”

However, what drew her toward the musical world was initially drums. She had tagged along to her cousin’s music institution and was learning how to play drums when the tutor advised her to sing.

“I still remember the bouquet of freesia that I received from my kindergarten teacher after my very first time on stage,” the singer reminisced.

“Both of my parents were working, so I was always the last one to leave. She was always with me until I left. Come to think of it, I think I was able to become who I am thanks to the many teachers who were always so good to me.”

Maybe her fond childhood memories affected her songs as well, as her fans have given her a lovely nickname “Flower Shop Girl” due to her many songs related to flowers.

Throughout the interview, she kept referring to her situation as “lucky” and that she was “thankful,” but Park went through a difficult period before she was able to debut at the end of 2018. She auditioned for the SBS K-pop audition program “K-pop Star” in its fourth and fifth seasons, but her share of screen time was completely cut out of the show. She again signed up for its sixth season in 2016 thinking that this was her last chance and made it to the final, but she didn’t receive the spotlight that she deserved due to the program’s falling popularity.

She was on the brink of giving up on her dream to become a singer, relying on various part-time jobs as a vocal guide until she met her agency.

Her moment arrived most unexpectedly. Her agency, B.O.D Entertainment, had come by her recording of “Falling In Love” by composer Oh Seong-hoon by chance and offered to sign a contract with her. The song became part of the soundtrack for the SBS drama series “Hymn of Death,” which featured actors Lee Jong-suk and Shin Hye-sun, and it became her debut song.

“[The agency] was the one who offered me a hand that I desperately needed when I was at the point of giving up, thinking that I lacked talent seeing that I couldn’t achieve my dream until now.”

There may be those who wondered that why such a talented vocalist had not been noticed before. The artist had wondered about that too and blames it on the lack of research in the past.

“I didn’t know what kind of songs would perk the audience’s ears and capture their attention,” Park said. “The advice that Yoo Hee-yeol [one of the judges in ‘K-pop Star’] gave me helped me a lot. He said that although my vocal style didn’t fit with this program, he believed that I could become a traditional balladist after a bit of fine-tuning. He recommended me to listen to songs by Yangpa. When I heard her, I realized instantly [what I lacked]. I was devoid of emotions [when I sung]. I was singing like a machine. I realized what it really meant to have one’s heart broken through songs like ‘Young Love’ and ‘Addio.’ If I’d kept practicing alone, I would have never known this.”

As for her stage name, she was inspired after reading the novel “Hynn,” which was written by Han Kang. In the story, one of the lines read, “Even though I lay in filth, I will only hand you white, [which is pronounced as ‘hynn’ in Korean], things.”

“Like the word hynn, I want to preserve innocence yet become a singer with many different colors, like how a blank white canvas can be filled with various colors,” she said. “Even though I’m contributing little now, I would one day like to write my own verses and create melodies for my own songs. It’s going to take a while though.”
