‘Super Band’ stars are back and ready to make an impact: Contestants from hit show have reunited to form Bandage

Sometimes, though, intense rivalry can breed a sense of camaraderie, as was the case on the hit music survival program “Super Band” which aired on JTBC last year.
The program’s goal was to single out talented musicians in order to form a band. Four contestants who made it to the show’s final six - Lim Hyung-bin, Lee Chan-sol, Kang Kyung-yoon and Shin Hyun-bin - have gotten together since the show ended to form their own band named Bandage and officially made their debut by releasing their first album “Square One” on April 3.
The band’s name, a compound of “Band” and “Windage,” is a nod to its desire to become influential through its music. The band plans to play genres as varied as pop metal, modern rock and more. All four members of the band participated in producing the album.

Q. How have you been doing since “Super Band”?
A. Lim: We had some time to catch our breath after our final round together on the show. Since we’ve been working hard [on the show] for the past eight months, we thought it would be as good a time as any to take a break - so we spent it on just resting while writing some songs.
Shin: I was already a member of another band, but we decided to disband. After that I was planning to go solo and had been writing my own songs for my album when I met up with our current band.
Lee: [The past couple of months] have been really fun for me. I got to perform on “Super Band” and also participated in a drama soundtrack. While I had time to recharge my energy just fooling around and playing games, I was also really busy writing songs.
Kang: After “Super Band” I helped out the band Gift by temporarily filling in as a drummer. The seat was vacant because the original member had to fulfill his mandatory military service. After that I joined our band.
What did “Super Band” mean to you?
Lim: It was a turning point in my life because I was originally a K-pop trainee. By coincidence I went out on this show, met the band members and have now made my debut.
Shin: I think the same. I’ve always wanted to be a guitarist. But it was different seeing all those people respond to the way I played guitar on the show. I wanted to positively influence the viewers through my guitar. I learned so much through the show and met these good people to form a band that exists today.
Lee: I also was part of another band that broke up [before I entered the show]. I didn’t want to be involved in another band, but meeting such nice people and getting to form our band through the show was really nice. I think Bandage will be my last band, and “Super Band” helped me become part of it.
How did you guys meet up to form the band?
Shin: After I dropped out of the show I met up with Lee, and he proposed that we form a band together. I thought about it for a few months, and in that period we talked a lot about our thoughts on music and we clicked.
Lee: I needed a guitarist and naturally thought of Shin. But I thought for a band to have synergy, four members would be the most adequate [number]. Since Shin is so versatile, I thought if we were to form a band, it would definitely be a hit.
Can you explain what your title track “Invisibles” is about?
Shin: It was a song that we made together after we formed our band. We talked a lot about our album, and we naturally came to a unanimous agreement that this should be our title track.
Lee: I think this is the song that was catchy and distinct enough to show off our distinct sound as a band. We worked on the lyrics together, but I did a little more.
What kind of music is Bandage going to pursue in the future?
Shin: We each have our own distinct personalities [that are reflected in the music] but can’t say that we are perfectly coordinated yet, so it’s too early to say what kind of band we’re going to be. [The album] is the start. We want to try out various things and also want to perform songs that have never been heard before. We want to make as many songs and release as many albums as we can.
Lee: I think we still lack many qualities since we’re still a rookie band. But we hope to become the kind of band that listeners enjoy.
Do you have a role model?
Lee: The Beatles. I love their music, and their album sales are the best in the world (laughs).
Shin: The Beatles, because they’re the definition of a successful band.
What is your goal as a musician?
Kang: I hope one day our song can come up in school textbooks. If our songs are written about in textbooks, that means our music has been accepted as an iconic song.
Lim: [Like I said before], I want to become a musician that can have a positive influence on people. On top of that, I want to create music that everyone who hears it can be proud of. I actually have a more specific goal in mind, but I want to reveal it after we have more experience.
Lee: As a musician, I think my happiest moment will be when our songs become popular.
Shin: I don’t know why, but at some point, I think people separate music from bands into a kind of distinct musical genre, when it’s no different than other genres. Instead of being known as a “band” musician, I want to be accepted as a talented musician.

밴디지 ”'슈퍼밴드', 인생의 전환점..교과서에 노래 실리는 게 목표”
지난해 방영된 JTBC '슈퍼밴드' 출신이 모여 새로운 조합의 밴드를 결성했다. 밴드명은 밴디지(Bandage)다.
밴디지는 '슈퍼밴드' 최종 톱6에 뽑힌 피플 온 더 브릿지의 이찬솔, 강경윤, 임형빈과 기타리스트 신현빈 등 총 4인으로 구성된 밴드. 'Band(밴드)'와 바람의 영향을 뜻하는 'Windage(윈디지)'의 합성어로 음악으로 영향력을 주는 밴드가 되고 싶다는 포부를 담아 밴드명을 정했다. 얼터너티브 록을 비롯해 팝 메탈, 모던 록 등 다채로운 장르의 밴드 음악을 선보이겠다는 계획이며, 이를 통해 밴디지만의 음악 세계를 완성해나갈 전망이다. 밴디지만의 음악 색깔을 채워나가기 위해 데뷔 앨범부터 멤버 전원이 앨범 프로듀싱에 참여했다. 데뷔곡은 '유령'이다. 과거의 기억과 마주한 현재의 '나 자신'을 표현한 자전적 메시지를 담은 노래다. 몽환적이면서도 강렬한 음악이 매력적이다.
-'슈퍼밴드' 이후 어떻게 지냈나.
임형빈 "'슈퍼밴드' 합동 공연까지 끝낸 후 공백이 있었다. '슈퍼밴드'에 공연까지 8개월 동안 열심히 살아왔으니깐 좀 쉬는 시간을 가지는 것도 좋을 것 같아서 곡도 쓰면서 쉬었다."
신현빈 "원래 하던 밴드가 있었는데 해체를 하게 됐다. 해체하고 뭘 할까 고민하다가 개인 앨범을 내야겠다는 생각에 곡을 쓰고 있었다. 그때 지금의 멤버를 만나서 팀을 꾸리게 됐다."
이찬솔 "'슈퍼밴드' 공연을 하고 드라마 OST에도 참여하고, 노래도 만들면서 바쁘게 지내온 것 같다. 재밌게 놀기도 하고, 게임도 하고 재충전도 했다."
강경윤 "'슈퍼밴드' 공연까지 마친 뒤 밴드 기프트 형들을 도와 드러머로 활동했다. 기프트 드러머가 군대에 있어서 그 자리를 대신 하다가 밴디지를 결성하면서 나왔다."
-'슈퍼밴드'는 어떤 의미의 프로그램인가.
임형빈 "인생의 전환점이다. 원래 아이돌을 준비하는 연습생이었다. 그러다가 우연치 않게 '슈퍼밴드'라는 프로그램에 나가서 멤버들을 잘 만나서 밴드로 데뷔하게 됐으니 말이다."
신현빈 "나 역시 전환점이라고 생각한다. 방송 나오기 전에도 물론 기타 기타리스트가 꿈이었다. 하지만 방송을 통해 많은 분들이 내 기타 소리에 반응하는 걸 보면서 신기하기도 하고 좀 더 기타 연주로 좋은 영향력을 주고 싶다는 생각을 했다. '슈퍼밴드'를 하면서 참 많이 배웠다. 좋은 사람들을 많이 만나서 인연을 맺은 것도 좋았다."
이찬솔 "원래 하던 밴드가 있었다. 해체하고 나선 다시 밴드를 안 하려고 했다. 그러다 우연히 '슈퍼밴드'에 나갔는데 좋은 팀원을 만났고, '슈퍼밴드' 덕에 새 밴드까지 결성하게 됐다. 내 인생의 마지막 밴드가 밴디지일 것 같은데 그런 밴드를 만들 수 있게 해준 프로그램이다."
-4명이 어떻게 밴디지로 뭉치게 됐나.
신현빈 "'슈퍼밴드' 중간에 탈락하고 이것저것 하다가 찬솔이 형을 만났는데 밴드를 같이 해보자고 제안했다. 몇 개월 고민하다가 음악적인 이야기를 많이 했는데 그때 마음이 잘 모아졌고 같이 하면 좋을 것 같다는 생각이 들었다. 그러면서 자연스럽게 함께 하게 됐다."
이찬솔 "기타리스트가 필요했는데 현빈이가 생각났다. 셋 보다는 넷이 밴드를 해야 시너지가 날 것 같다고 생각했다. 현빈이가 잘하니깐 다같이 하면 잘 할 것 같았다. 또 '슈퍼밴드' 경연 중에도 현빈이랑 같이 팀을 할 뻔 했는데 같이 못해서 이번에 같이 하면 좋을 것 같았다."
-데뷔곡이자 타이틀곡 '유령'에 대해서 설명해달라.
신현빈 "팀이 꾸려지고 나서 만든 곡이다. 많은 이야기를 하면서 만든 곡인데 데뷔 앨범 중 자연스럽게 타이틀곡을 하자는 데 의견이 모아졌다."
이찬솔 "앨범 수록곡 중 가장 밴드로서 우리를 보여줄 수 있는 곡이면서도 대중적이고 어렵지 않은 노래라고 생각한다. 가사는 다같이 써는데 내가 좀 더 많이 썼다. 팝송을 번역한 가사를 보면서 노래 가삿말에 대한 영감이 많이 떠올랐다."
-밴디지가 추구하는 음악은 무엇인가.
신현빈 "개개인의 개성이 있고 아직 네 명이 만난지 1년이 안 되서 완벽하게 조화를 이룬다고 할 순 없다. 그래서 아직 밴디지 색깔을 정의내리긴 힘들지만, 만들어가는 과정이라고 생각한다. 이제까지 없었던 노래를 하고 싶고, 다양한 시도도 해보고 싶다. 그러면서 밴디지 음악을 만들어가고 싶다. 또 최대한 많은 곡을 쓰고 많은 앨범을 내고 싶다."
이찬솔 "이제 막 시작하는 밴드라 미흡한 점이 많다고 생각한다. 하지만 앞으로 듣는 분들이 기대를 하게 하는 음악을 하는 그런 밴드가 되고 싶다."
-롤모델은.
이찬솔 "비틀즈다. 음악도 좋고, 밴드 중 앨범 판매량 1위라서.(웃음)"
신현빈 "비틀즈는 밴드의 교과서이니깐. 롤모델은 비틀즈다."
-뮤지션으로서 목표는.
강경윤 "음악 교과서에 밴디지 노래가 실렸으면 좋겠다. 교과서에 노래가 실리면 밴드 음악을 대표하는 노래로 인정받는 것이니깐."
임형빈 "선한 영향력을 끼치고 싶다. 또 전세계적으로 모두가 자랑스러워하는 음악을 하고 싶다. 사실 구체적인 목표도 있는데 좀 더 경력이 쌓인 후 말하고 싶다."
이찬솔 "사람들이 많이 듣는 노래를 하는 뮤지션이 가장 행복하지 않을까. 그런 뮤지션이 되고 싶다."
강경윤 "밴드 음악은 하나의 카테고리로 묶이는 것 같다. 댄스나 발라드와 같은 음악인데 말이다. 그래서 밴드 뮤지션 중에 음악 잘 하는 사람으로 인정 받는 게 아니라 그냥 뮤지션으로서 인정 받고 싶다."
