오거돈, 잠적과 도피가 능사 아니다

Former Busan Mayor Oh Keo-don was staying at a guesthouse in Geoje, South Gyeongsang, after holding a press conference on April 23 and admitting to having made a sexual advance on a city hall employee and resigning from office. When journalists from a local paper found him at the guesthouse, he rushed out of the lodgings. When the journalist asked if he was the former mayor, he kept his face hidden under a sun hat and did not answer. He denied he was the person they were looking for when the press asked him about if people from the Blue House meddled to keep his scandal a secret until the election was over he hurried away in his car.

성추행 사건으로 사퇴한 오거돈 전 부산시장이 그제 경남 거제의 한 펜션에서 목격됐다. 지난달 23일 사퇴 기자회견을 한 후 잠적한 지 11일 만이었다. 부산일보 취재진이 펜션에 있는 오 전 시장을 발견하자 인기척을 느낀 그는 검은색 선캡을 착용한 후 펜션 밖으로 나갔다고 한다. "시장님 맞느냐"는 취재진의 물음에 아무런 대답도 하지 않은 채 발길만 재촉했다. 취재진이 이어 성추행 수습 과정에서의 불법 청탁, 정무라인 개입 등 각종 의혹과 관련한 질문을 하자 "사람 잘못 보셨습니다"는 말만 남기고 도망치듯 차에 몸을 싣고 펜션을 떠났다.

It is a wretched sight to see the former administrator of the country’s second largest city in hiding after committing sexual assault. His running away from the press is disgraceful to the city’s residents and his former title. Oh has used his power to crush the life of a city employee. The crime cannot be pardoned just because he has resigned from office. Does he not bear any remorseful feelings toward the people who voted for him?

파렴치한 권력형 성범죄를 저지른 오 전 시장의 각종 의혹에 대한 묵묵부답과 숨기에만 급급한 모습을 보며 실소를 금치 않을 수 없다. 사퇴 후 종적을 감추고 마치 사태가 수그러들기만을 기다리는 듯 펜션에서 숨어지내는 걸 도대체 국민들이 어떻게 받아들이겠나. 게다가 취재진의 질문에 도망치듯 자리를 뜨는 모습은 한때 공인이었던 사실조차 의심케 한다. 오 전 시장의 죄는 막강한 권한과 우월적 지위에 있는 여당 소속 자치단체장이 위력을 사용해 부하 여성 공무원의 삶을 한순간에 무너뜨렸다는 점에서 단순히 시장직에서 물러나는 것으로 해결될 일이 아니다. 그를 선출했지만 바닥으로 추락한 부산 시민들의 자존심은 어떡할 것인가.

The investigation has been dragging on without any progress due to difficulty in getting testimony from the victim. Police claim they cannot press the victim who is fearful of secondary damage. But the police nevertheless must show more eagerness to the investigation as not to invite unnecessary suspicion. Oh also should maintain the dignity of a former senior public official. His flight only enrages the people. He was elected after his fourth attempt. He has served various posts in the central and Busan governments. He was the minister for maritime and fisheries under President Roh Moo-hyun. Hiding until the controversy dies down does not befit a veteran public servant. He must explain frankly about the allegations around him and seek forgiveness from the people.

수사도 피해자 진술 확보에 어려움을 겪고 있어 이렇다 할 진전이 없다고 한다. 2차 피해 등을 걱정해 진술을 독촉하기도 쉽지 않은 상황이라지만 경찰은 2차 피해를 피하는 방법을 찾아 수사에 더 적극성을 보여야 한다. 그래야 쓸데없는 오해를 사지 않는다. 오 전 시장 역시 한때 공인으로서의 자세와 품격을 지켜주길 바란다. 도망다니는 듯한 모습은 부산 시민들을 다시 한번 분노하게 할 뿐이다. 네 번의 도전 끝에 부산시장에 당선됐고, 내무부와 부산 요직을 두루 거친 그다. 노무현 정부에선 해양수산부 장관도 지냈다. 그런 공인의 이 같은 잠적과 도피는 취할 태도가 아니다. 뒤로만 숨을 게 아니라 제기된 의혹에 대해 정직하게 해명해야 마땅하다. 그리고 열 번이고 백 번이라도 국민 앞에 나서 고개 숙이고 용서를 구해야 한다.
