Lucy looks to break the mold

The boy band is focused on showing its many facets

The local music scene is heavily dominated by cookie-cutter K-pop boy bands, but recently it has seen a surge in bands that offer some much-needed creativity to the scene.

Some of these newly debuted bands include Hoppipolla, Purple Rain and Bandage. The bands were put together through JTBC’s music show “Super Band,” which aired between April and July last year.

But of all the newly formed bands created through the TV show, four-member band Lucy, which ended up as the runner-up, stands out.

By simply looking at the profiles of each member, it’s clear to see why the band is being dubbed as the next big thing.

Cho Won-sang is a producer for Lucy and plays the bass guitar. The 24-year-old rearranged Coldplay’s “Adventure Of A Lifetime” for one of the segments on “Super Band” and received acclaim from the judges and audience alike. Its rendition was impressive enough to catch the attention of the song’s original artist Coldplay. The British rock band shared a video clip of Lucy performing the song through its official Twitter account and wrote, “This is all kinds of awesome.”

Cho composes a wide scope of music from hip-hop tracks to bubbly dance tunes for K-pop girl group Cosmic Girls.

Shin Ye-chan is the frontman of Lucy and also plays violin. He started playing violin at 10 with his mother who majored in vocal music.

Shin Gwang-il plays drums but he can sing, too.

The drummer grew up in Peru thanks to his missionary father. He joined a band as a vocalist when growing up but then began learning bass guitar and drums. “I want to make music using traditional instruments of Peru sometime in the future,” said Shin.

When “Super Band” was broadcast, Lucy had vocalist Lee Ju-hyeok at the helm, but he decided to return to his original group as the TV show came to an end. His absence was filled by new member, Choi Sang-yeop.

Choi was eliminated in the first round of “Super Band,” but he captivated Lucy members with his unique and fresh voice along with his boy-next-door image.

He’s also sang on more than 10 original soundtrack songs for drama series, including the song “Baby Baby” for the drama series “My First First Love” (2019).

The combination of the four, all from different backgrounds, creates a sound that is truly unique.

After “Super Band” ended, Lucy signed a contract with Mystic Story, a music agency led by veteran singer Yoon Jong-shin, and recently released its debut EP titled “Dear.”

The debut EP consists of two tracks — an instrumental intro and “Flowering” — and the two songs clearly signal the direction the band is heading in.

The JoongAng Ilbo met Lucy before its debut single was released on May 8.

The band said it tried to contain “the fresh new feelings of getting started” in the debut single.

In order to convey feelings and stories through its songs, Lucy is interested in adding atmosphere to its music by creating ambient sounds.

When the band was competing in “Super Band,” it made the best use of real sounds. For example, when performing “Snooze,” it used sounds of alarm clocks going off to express the hectic lives of people living in a big city. For another song “Cry Bird,” real sounds of animals roaring were used.

Cho, who writes and composes all the songs for Lucy, said, “I get a lot of inspiration from temperatures, fragrances and colors that I can feel in certain situations.” He goes out to collect real sounds and tries to find a place that is most similar to the space in his mind.

“Everyone may notice the change of the seasons in different ways, but for me, I feel spring from the air on the rooftop where I feed my dog. I smell spring from the air. The air is still a bit chilly, but it has warmth in it [when the spring comes],” said Cho.

“I recorded the sounds of the wind from my rooftop and used it for the track ‘Flowering.’ When I worked on ‘Swim,’ I went to the Han River to record the sound of the river running. I could easily create the sound by just using the sound of water running from a tap, but I made the song because I was thinking about the Han River, so I went to the river,” Cho added.

Shin the frontman defines Lucy’s music this way: “It may sound abstract, but every track has its own story to tell, so listeners can easily conjure up certain images by listening to it. We try to give them a picture for a certain space.”

Lucy’s music is mostly feel-good, but the band said it is open to all genres.

“I haven’t talked about this with other members yet, but I want to release mini-albums during the summer and regular albums in the winter and do various genres of music,” said Cho. “I feel like we can make upbeat music that has elements of K-pop, too,” Cho added.

Shin shared his goal for the group. “What matters the most is an identity of a band. A lot of people say they come up with the color blue when they listen to our music. But you know, there are many different hues in blue, so I want to show our various sides of blue.”

물 느낌 살리려 한강 물소리 녹음…루시 음악은 그런 것

밴드의 경계를 허무는 팀이 속속 등장하고 있다. 지난해 방영된 JTBC 음악 예능 ‘슈퍼밴드’를 통해 배출된 실력자들이 뭉쳐 가요계에 출사표를 던진 게 대표적이다. 우승팀 호피폴라(아일 홍진호 하현상 김영소)를 필두로 퍼플레인(채보훈 양지완 김하진 이나우 정광현)처럼 기존 멤버를 유지하는 팀이 있는가 하면, 에이핑크·빅톤 등 아이돌그룹을 배출한 플레이엠엔터테인먼트에서 새롭게 조직한 밴디지(이찬솔 강경윤 신현빈 임형빈) 같은 새로운 팀도 등장했다.

그중에서도 준우승을 차지한 루시는 단연 눈에 띈다. ‘어드벤처 오브 어 라이프타임(Adventure of A Lifetime)’ 무대로 원곡자인 영국의 슈퍼밴드 콜드플레이에게 극찬을 받은 조원상(24)이라는 프로듀서는 물론, 파워풀한 바이올리니스트 신예찬(28)과 노래하는 드러머 신광일(23)이라는 독특한 조합으로 기성 밴드에서 절대 찾아볼 수 없는 사운드를 빚어낸다. 보컬 이주혁이 기존 소속 밴드인 기프트로 돌아가면서 생긴 공백은 최상엽(26)이 채웠다. 최상엽은 본선 1라운드에서 떨어졌지만 “독특하면서도 호불호가 없는 목소리와 풋풋한 시골 소년 같은 느낌”으로 멤버들의 마음을 사로잡았다.

8일 나온 데뷔 싱글 ‘디어(DEAR.)’는 왜 이들이 기대주인지를 보여준다. ‘인트로(INTRO)’와 타이틀곡 ‘개화’가 수록된 단출한 구성이지만 이들이 어디로 가고자 하는지를 엿볼 수 있기 때문이다. 지난 연말 ‘슈퍼밴드 톱 3’ 콘서트를 시작하며 숙소 합숙 생활을 시작한 이들은 아이돌처럼 인트로 음악에 맞춰 프롤로그 필름 ‘루시: 트래블러 앤 가이드(LUCY: traveler & guide)’ 영상을 공개했다. ‘루시 아일랜드’로 떠나는 티켓을 받아들면 “바람아 내게 봄을 데려와 줘/ 벚꽃 잎이 흩날리듯이”라고 속삭이는 ‘개화’가 이어지는 식이다. 발매 전 서울 서소문에서 만난 이들은 “팀으로서 새롭게 시작하는 느낌을 담았다”고 밝혔다.

윤종신이 이끄는 미스틱스토리의 첫 밴드인 이들이 새로운 시공간에 관심을 갖는 이유는 ‘앰비언스(ambience)’ 즉 공간이 가진 특징적 사운드를 구현하는데 관심이 많기 때문이다. ‘슈퍼밴드’에서도 자명종 알람 소리를 통해 바쁜 도시인의 고충을 표현한 ‘선잠’, 동물 울음소리로 정글로 안내하는 ‘크라이 버드(Cry Bird)’ 등 다양한 곡을 선보였다. 작사·작곡을 도맡고 있는 조원상은 “특정 상황에서 느껴지는 온도, 향기, 색감 등에서 영감을 많이 얻는다”고 설명했다. 그래서 현장음을 채집할 때도 최대한 머릿속에 있는 공간과 비슷한 곳을 찾는 편이라고.

“사람마다 계절을 느끼는 건 다르겠지만 저는 강아지 밥 주러 옥상에 올라갈 때 느껴지는 공기를 보고 알거든요. 아 이제 봄 냄새가 나는구나, 시원하면서도 따뜻함이 느껴지는구나 하고. 그래서 옥상에서 나는 바람 소리를 ‘개화’에 담았죠. 사실 ‘스윔(Swim)’ 때도 그랬죠. 물소리가 필요하면 그냥 화장실에서 물 틀어놔도 되거든요. 근데 한강을 떠올리며 작업한 곡이라 굳이 한강까지 가서 소리를 담은 거죠.” 신예찬은 “얼핏 추상적으로 들릴 수도 있지만, 모든 곡에 스토리텔링이 있어서 듣는 사람도 쉽게 비슷한 광경을 떠올릴 수 있다. 공간에 대한 공감을 이끌어내는 것”이라고 덧붙였다.

멤버별 음악적 배경이 다른 것도 강점이다. 박현진·에이칠로의 ‘버킷 리스트’(2018)나 우주소녀의 ‘12 O’clock’(2019)을 만든 조원상은 힙합부터 아이돌까지 다양한 스펙트럼을 자랑하고, ‘듀엣가요제’ 출신인 최상엽은 드라마 ‘첫사랑은 처음이라서’의 ‘애기애기해’(2019) 등 부른 OST만 10여 곡에 달한다. 선교사 아버지를 따라 페루에서 중·고등학교를 졸업한 신광일은 “보컬로 시작했는데 밴드를 하면서 베이스·드럼 등 다양한 악기를 다루게 됐다”며 “카혼 등 페루 전통 악기를 활용한 음악도 만들어보고 싶다”고 밝혔다. 성악을 전공한 어머니를 따라 10살 때부터 바이올린을 연주한 신예찬은 “크로아티아 첼로 듀오 투첼로스처럼 열정적인 음악도 도전해보고 싶다”고 말했다.

콘서트에서 선보인 ‘난로’처럼 계절감이 두드러지는 곡도 있지만, 특정 장르에 머물고 싶지 않다는 욕심도 내비쳤다. 단국대에서 응용화학공학을 전공한 최상엽이 “이 친구들을 만나 항상 새로운 것을 배운다. 그 전까지 굉장히 좁은 곳에서 음악을 하고 있었다는 생각이 든다”고 말하자, 조원상은 “멤버들 덕분에 다양한 재료를 가지고 마음껏 음악을 할 수 있어 행복하다”고 거들었다. 그는 “아직 혼자만의 생각이지만 여름엔 미니앨범, 겨울에는 정규앨범을 통해 다양한 장르의 음악을 선보일 계획”이라며 “요즘 가장 잘나가는 음악인 K팝 같은 요소도 적극적으로 활용해 화려하고 신나는 곡을 만들어보고 싶다”고 귀띔했다.

“밴드냐 팝이냐 하는 정의보다 팀의 색깔이 더 중요한 것 같아요. 루시 노래를 들으면 청량한 느낌이 든다는 얘길 많이 하는데 저희 음악이 파란색 계열이라고 생각하거든요. 파란색 안에서도 여러 종류가 있는 것처럼 다양한 음악을 선보이고 싶습니다.”(신예찬)
