A decade after his fall from grace, the singer is back in the spotlight

Singer-actor Rain, also known as Jung Ji-hoon, ruled the 2000s. His success was recognized globally and even earned him nominations for Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People.

Having debuted in 2002, Rain instantly soared to stardom with hits like “Bad Guy” (2002), “How to Avoid the Sun” (2003) and “Rainism” (2008) and was admired for his ability to sing and dance with such synchronicity.

But after a decade, the star’s fame began to fade. His blockbuster films and dramas flopped and every track he released failed to make a mark on the music industry or the fans.

A prime example of these missteps in is career was a song he released in December 2017, titled "Gang."

It was ridiculed for its narcissistic lyrics that included lines like, “Yeah, I’m back. My name is Rain. Everyone acknowledges my worth […] They call it return of the king.”

In the music video, the singer, clad in a jet-black leather top with padded shoulders, maintains intense eye contact with the camera while performing some seriously questionable dance moves.

Although attributed to the downfall of Rain, three years after its original release, the song is suddenly shining a light on the 38-year-old entertainer once again.

The official music video of “Gang” has garnered 10 million views on YouTube as of May 23 as well as more than 100,000 comments.

But is all press, good press? Is "Gang" finally being appreciated, or is mockery the reason why it's back in the limelight? The JoongAng Ilbo looked into the newfound craze over “Gang.”

It all started when a high school girl uploaded a dance cover of “Gang” on her YouTube channel last November.

She imitated Rain’s original choreography while dressed in costume — which featured exaggerated shoulders.

The clip went viral and “Gang” was subsequently made into numerous memes.

Rain is not the first celebrity who is being rediscovered thanks to old video clips.

Kim Eung-soo, a once obscure actor, found overnight fame thanks to his old film, “The War of Flowers” (2006) — 13 years from its initial release.

Again, it was the power of memes that sparked interest in the actor after a scene from the movie was made into a popular internet image.

The meme success brought numerous endorsement deals to the 59-year-old actor and also landed him a lead role in the drama series “Kkondae Intern,” a first time in his 24-year-long acting career.

Culture critic Jeong Deok-hyun said, “Unlike in the past, the public pick what they want to have fun with online. ‘Gang’ is popular because it became a place where internet users can get together and share their thoughts over the music video by writing and leaving their comments. By doing so, they are reinterpreting the content.”

While Rain may be disappointed that his musical endeavors are not being taken seriously, the comments on the “Gang” music video show that the lighthearted and comical interpretation of the song are the main factor behind its newfound success. “This music video is like a vaccination. If you watch this video at least once, you will find yourself being generous to all the other corny K-pop songs,” one comment reads.

The public also appeared to unite in defense of Rain earlier this month when Statistics Korea left a comment underneath the music video on YouTube using the expression “UBD.”

UBD is an acronym that comes from Rain’s 2019 film “Race to Freedom: Um Bok Dong” and is often used on the internet when disparaging Rain, as the film only ended up attracting a mere 172,212 moviegoers.

Online users were enraged by the comment written by Statistics Korea, saying it was inappropriate for a government organization to sneer at an individual.

With mounting criticism, Statistics Korea issued an official apology days later. Neither Rain nor his agency has responded.

The singer recently appeared on the ongoing TV show “Hangout with Yoo” on MBC and candidly talked about the craze over “Gang.” Viewers expressed how impressed they were over his reaction and response.

Rain simply said, “'Gang’ doesn’t look good to people these days. I have a lot of fun reading comments [on YouTube] rather than watching TV shows.”

After the TV appearance, Rain received favorable feedback from viewers for being straightforward about the parodies and memes that poke fun at him.

“Comic moments come when one candidly reveals his or her weaknesses. Rain gave a good impression of himself [to the viewers] this way,” said culture critic Lee Young-mi.

Although his career may now be centered on parodies, his talents landed him on Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in 2006, marking the first time for an Asian celebrity to make it onto the renowned list, and was again featured on the list in 2011.

“A lot of people are struggling to find jobs. They are also suffering from [the aftermath of] the coronavirus. Because of this, they think highly of people who have gone through hard times and overcome them,” said Kwak Geum-ju, a professor of psychology at Seoul National University.

“In addition, internet users made him a laughing stock for a long time, but Rain wasn’t offended. Instead, he reacted to it in a mature way. Such attitude changed the public’s mind,” she added.

Whether the reasons behind his newfound fame are positive or negative, it’s clear that Rain is recovering from an almost 10-year slump and that resilience has the public rooting for the once-iconic singer.
