Veteran actor Song Ji-hyo thrills fans in latest movie

Actor and entertainer Song Ji-hyo, one of longtime members of popular SBS variety show “Running Man,” surprised her fans in her latest role in the thriller “Intruder” released in the theaters last week.

“I was first drawn to the role because the character was someone completely different from the image that I had portrayed so far,” Song told Ilgan Sports, an affiliate of the Korea JoongAng Daily, on June 2. “I am not known for roles in thrillers, and that was exactly why I wanted to try it this time.”

“Intruder,” released on June 4, is a thriller about a family who miraculously finds their daughter 25 years after she went missing as a small child. But the girl, played by Song, behaves strangely from time to time, something that only her older brother, played by actor Kim Mu-yeol, seems to be able to notice.

Song spoke to the Ilgan Sports about how she came to take on the thriller genre for the first time in her two-decade acting career, and her reflections on her past 10 years on “Running Man."

The following are edited excerpts of the interview.

How did you decide to take on the role in the thriller?

I saw the scenario when they proposed it to me, and the minute that I read it I wanted in. I liked the character setting and the story. I was drawn to the role in the first place because the character was someone completely different from the image that I had portrayed so far. And that’s how I have always been since I was young — wanting to try something completely opposite. That inevitably has led to some of my decisions that perhaps seem inconsistent from the outside. But that is how I joined the “Running Man” series as well.

What do you mean?

Before I joined the variety show “Running Man,” I had actually played roles in darker-themed dramas and movies. [Song appeared in horror “Whispering Corridors” (1998) when she was 17.] So my image changed completely when I joined the show. For me, it’s kind of all about what I want to do and what I want to be at that moment.

What were some changes you had to make for your role in the thriller?

I lost 5 kilograms (11 pounds) in weight for the role in the early filming stages, and lost 2 kilograms more after that. I think I probably gained back twice that amount (laughs). But age does get to you when it comes to your body’s metabolism rate. It wasn’t easy to lose that much weight. I went on a diet and ran after work, some 10 kilometers (6 miles), every day. I tried not to eat after 6 p.m. That was the hardest part.

What was it like to work with Kim Mu-yeol?

Kim is built for action scenes. In some of our action-packed scenes, I relied on him a lot (laughs).

Are you concerned about the success of the movie in the midst of the Covid-19 outbreak?

We had to postpone the film’s release date twice. I know even now, we have to keep to social distancing, and I myself am hesitant to ask people to fill up the theater to watch the movie. But I think more people are getting used to running their daily lives with the social distancing measures. Hopefully the film can provide them some respite in the middle of all this.

Did you foresee that you would be a consistent member of “Running Man” when you first joined?

It’s been 10 years already! I spent my 30s with the members of the show. They taught me so much — about life, and even about who I am. I am thankful to everyone.

영화 '침입자'의 배우 송지효가 스릴러 장르에 오랜만에 도전한 이유를 전했다.

'침입자' 개봉을 앞둔 송지효는 2일 오전 서울 삼청동 한 카페에서 진행된 인터뷰에서 "처음엔 시나리오를 읽고 탐이 났다. 캐릭터도 그렇고 너무 탐이 났다. 무작정 하고 싶어서 감독님과 만났다"며 "시나리오 자체가 정말 마음에 들었다. 그냥 하고 싶었다. 어울리고 안 어울리고는 제가 얼마나 해내냐에 따라 다르겠으나, 열심히 하고 싶었다. 잘 어울리고 싶었다"고 말했다.

이어 "그간 제 이미지와는 전혀 반대되는 캐릭터였기 때문에 끌렸던 것 같다. 그간 어두운 캐릭터를 많이 연기하지 않았다. 해오지 않았던 것에 대한 갈망을 '침입자' 시나리오를 읽고 알게 됐다. 그래서 더 하고 싶다는 욕심이 났다"고 덧붙였다.

'침입자'는 실종됐던 동생 유진(송지효)이 25년 만에 집으로 돌아온 뒤 가족들이 조금씩 변해가고, 이를 이상하게 여긴 오빠 서진(김무열)이 동생의 비밀을 쫓다 충격적 진실과 마주하게 되는 미스터리 스릴러 영화다. 송지효, 김무열이 출연한다. '아몬드', '서른의 반격' 등을 집필한 베스트셀러 작가 손원평의 장편 연출 데뷔작이다. 오는 6월 4일 개봉.

또 송지효는 "어렸을 때부터 반대 성향을 지향하는 면이 있는 것 같다. 지금 하고 있는 것과 반대되는 것이 하고 싶다. 그러다보니 선택이 일정하지는 않지만, 이전에도 그랬고 앞으로도 그럴 것 같다. 그냥 지금 제가 하고 싶은 게 뭔지를 중요하게 여기며 살아왔다"고 이야기했다.

그는 또한 10년간 출연해온 '런닝맨'을 향한 애정과 생각을 밝혔다.

"'런닝맨' 하기 전에는 굉장히 어두운 이미지가 많았다. 이전에 작품 활동을 했을 때는 저도 밝은 면이 있는데 어두운 것이 부각됐다. '런닝맨'을 하면서 밝은 느낌을 얻었다"고 말했다.

또, "30대를 '런닝맨' 멤버들과 보냈다. '런닝맨'이라는 예능으로 30대를 다 보냈더라. 서른에 시작했는데, 마흔이 됐다. 제 인생에 삼십대를 빼놓을 수 없게 됐다. 10년이라는 시간 동안 함께하다보니, 제가 그동안 많이 몰랐다는 생각을 했다. 저에 대해 일깨워주고 소통하는 방법을 알려준 프로그램이다. 저에 대해 많이 알게해준 것만으로도 크게 얻었다. 10년이다보니 너무 잘 아는 것도 있지만 그 분들로 인해 고마운 것들도 많다"고 이야기했다.

이제 마흔이 된 송지효. "이름표 떼기 힘들다"는 그는 "요령도 생겼다. 한 분야에서 오랫동안 하다보면 장인이 왜 생기는지 알겠다"며 웃었다.

송지효는 스릴러 장르 연기를 위해 체중을 감량했다고 전했다.

"5kg 정도 빼고 후반부에 2kg 정도 더 빠졌다. 촬영이 끝나고 두배로 더 찐 것 같다"고 말했다.

"나이 드니까 살이 잘 안 빠진다"며 웃어 보인 그는 "식단 관리를 하고, 스케줄 끝나고 집에 가서 10km 정도는 꾸준히 뛰었다. 오후 6시 이후에 안 먹으려고 노력했다. 식단 관리가 제일 어렵더라. 살이 빠지다보니 단점이 체력이 급격하게 안 좋아졌다. 가면 갈수록 점점 유진스러워지기 위해서 감독님과 이야기를 많이 나눴다. 나름대로 생각하다보니 살이 더 빠지더라"고 덧붙였다.

극중 몸 쓰는 연기를 보여주기도 하는 송지효. 그는 "액션이 많지는 않았다. 몸싸움을 하는 정도였다. 저 혼자 한다고 되는 게 아니다. 김무열이 거의 액션 배우이기 때문에 김무열에게 리액션을 한 것 뿐이다. 김무열의 역할이 컸다. 김무열이 그렇게 해줬기 때문에 제가 더 자유롭게 연기할 수 있었다"며 공을 김무열에게 돌렸다.

‘침입자’는 코로나19 사태 이후 한국 상업영화로 처음 개봉에 나선다. 이에 대해 송지효는 "부담감이 많다. 거리를 유지해야 하고, 많은 분들에게 극장에 와달라고 하는 것도 겁이 난다"고 말했다.

이어 "안전이 어느 정도 익숙해졌고, 안전 수칙을 지키면서 어떻게 즐길 수 있는지 알게 된 시기인 것 같다"면서 "저 또한 극장을 오랜만에 갔다. 큰 스크린을 보니 여유롭게 집중할 수 있었다. 그런 생활의 여유가 좋은데, 그게 저희 영화가 더 많은 분들에게 조금이라도 더 여유를 드리고 싶다"는 바람을 전했다.

코로나19 여파로 앞서 두 차례 개봉 시기를 미룬 '침입자'. 이에 대해 송지효는 "많이 기다렸다. 시국이 안 좋다보니 배급사 쪽에서 (개봉 시기) 결정을 내린 것을 따라야했다. 힘들지만은 않았다"고 밝혔다.
