A device from MoceanLab, a U.S. company owned by Hyundai Motor, will be installed in SoCar vehicles to collect data.

Hyundai Motor Group is working with Lotte Rent-a-Car, SK Rent-a-Car and SoCar to harvest driver data.

The three companies will allow the carmaker to access information collected from the trips taken by customers renting cars. It will use the data in the design and development of its cars.

The car rental companies will use the information to improve their infrastructure and develop new services.

Lotte Rent-a-Car and SK Rent-a-Car will share data collected on the customers through Developers, an open-data platform used by Hyundai Motor, Kia Motors and Genesis.

Data collected will include driving distance, status of the vehicle and the driving patterns.

“The mobility business depends largely on the amount of data collected,” Hyundai Motor said in a release. “This is why a lot of mobility companies are placing a majority of its R&D workforce on analyzing data.”
