Kim Chong-in, interim leader of the main opposition United Future Party (UFP), kneels to pay respects at the May 18th National Cemetery in Gwangju on Wednesday. Kim is the first leader of the conservative party to offer an apology for some of the party members’ denial of the 1980 Gwangju democratic uprising, in which hundreds were massacred by the military junta of Chun Doo Hwan.
