Seoul’s police chief Monday threatened to suspend or revoke the driver’s license of anyone who participates in a so-called car rally anywhere in the capital on National Foundation Day this Saturday, as anti-Moon Jae-in activists refuse to comply with government social distancing rules.

반정부 시위자들이 사회적 거리두기 방침 준수를 거부하자, 서울지방경찰청장은 개천절인 이번 토요일에 서울시내 어디서든 차량시위에 참여하는 경우 운전면허증을 정지하거나 취소하겠다고 월요일 경고했다.

Several right-wing civic groups have been vowing to protest the president and his administration this weekend by taking their cars out onto streets and shouting from their vehicles — a car rally. The plan came in response to the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s ban on any congregations of 10 people or more through Oct. 11 to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

몇몇 보수단체들은 이번 주말에 차를 거리로 몰고 나와 차 안에서 구호를 외치는 이른바 ‘차량시위’를 벌여 현 정부를 규탄하겠다고 밝혀왔다. 서울시가 코로나바이러스 확산을 방지하기 위해 10월11일까지 10명 이상 집회를 모두 금지한 것에 대한 대응으로 차량시위 계획이 나왔다.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government has also designated no-rally zones in several parts of downtown Seoul, including in Jongno District, where even rallies of fewer than 10 people are prohibited.

서울시는 또 종로구를 포함한 서울시내 여러 구역을 10인 이하 집회도 금지한 ‘집회 금지’ 구역으로 지정해놓고 있다.

The car rally was designed to evade any chance of transmitting the virus, but the Seoul government and police claim virus transmission can still occur in the process of organizing the events — plus the fact that long lines of cars would seriously disturb traffi c.

코로나바이러스 전염 가능성을 피하기 위해 차량시위가 고안됐지만, 서울시와 경찰은 차량시위를 준비하는 과정에서 전염이 발생할 수 있고 긴 차량행렬은 심각한 교통체증을 유발한다고 주장한다.

Even Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun weighed in last week, saying any participant in massive car rallies would encounter “zero tolerance” by law enforcement — and possibly get arrested or have their license revoked, or both.
