Export prices fell to the lowest level in 36 years in November due to the strength of the Korean won against the U.S. dollar, central bank data showed Wednesday.

한국은행이 발표한 데이터에 따르면 원화 강세로 지난 11월 수출물가가 36년 만에 최저치를 기록했다.

According to the Bank of Korea, the export price index fell 0.8 percent in November on month, to 91.96. This is the lowest level since 91.09 recorded in December, 1984. The index has been sliding for four straight months since August.

한국은행에 따르면 11월 수출물가지수는 91.96으로 전달인 10월에 비해 0.8% 떨어졌다. 이는 1984년 12월 91.09를 기록한 이래 최저치다. 이 지수는 지난 8월 이후 4개월 연속 하락하고 있다.

Compared to last year, export prices fell by 4.9 percent, extending the year-on-year index decline to 18 months.

지난해와 비교하면 4.9% 하락했다. 전년 대비 수출물가지수의 하락은 18개월째 이어지고 있다.

The export price index is based on the value of export deals in Korean won, meaning changing exchange rates can heavily infl uence the index.

exchange rate: 환율. 자기 나라 돈과 다른 나라 돈의 교환 비율.

수출물가지수는 수출 계약을 원화 가치로 따진 것이기 때문에 환율변화는 지수에 큰 영향을 미친다.

“The recent rise in the value of the Korean won against the greenback was a major driver [of the decline in export prices],” a central bank official said.

한국은행 관계자는 “수출물가 하락의 가장 큰 요인은 최근의 원달러 환율 하락(달러에 비해 원화의 가치가 높아진 것)”이라고 말했다.

The average value of the Korean won against the U.S. dollar appreciated by 2.4 percent from 1,144.68 won in October to 1,116.76 won last month, according to the Bank of Korea.

한국은행에 따르면 미국 1달러에 대한 원화의 평균값은 지난 10월 1144.68원에서 지난달 1116.76원으로 하락하며 원화의 가치가 2.4% 높아졌다.

Export prices based on contractual currency, which does not take into account changes in the exchange rate, actually increased by 1.4 percent in November compared to the previous month.

환율 변화를 고려하지 않는 계약통화 기준 11월 수출물가는 전달에 비해 1.4% 상승했다.

By sector, the export price of coal and petroleum products rose as international oil prices increased, but prices of semiconductors including dynamic randomaccess memory (DRAM) chips fell. The coronavirus pandemic has pulled down global demand for chips, also pulling down chip prices, the bank official said.

dynamic random-access memory: 디램(DRAM). 컴퓨터 저장장치의 일종.
chip: 반도체칩(semiconductor chip). 원래 칩은 얇은 판 조각을 가리키는 말인데, 컴퓨터나 스마트폰에 들어가는 아주 작은 전자회로의 집합체를 가리키는 말로 쓰이고 있다.

부문별로 보면 석탄과 석유 제품의 수출가격은 국제유가 상승으로 인해 올랐다. 하지만 DRAM 등 반도체 가격은 하락했다. 코로나바이러스 사태로 반도체에 대한 세계 수요가 감소했으며 반도체 가격도 하락했다고 한은 관계자는 말했다.

While the strong won has translated to reduced export profitability for Korean companies, the bank said the impact of exchange rate changes on exports has decreased in recent years as Korean companies have solidified their presence in overseas markets with high quality products and are able to mitigate exchange rate effects by importing intermediate goods or locating their production plants overseas.

원화강세는 한국 기업들의 채산성 악화로 해석되지만 수출에 있어 환율변화의 영향은 최근 몇 년 동안 감소해 왔다고 한국은행은 말했다. 한국 기업들은 고품질의 제품으로 해외시장에서 위상이 강화되고 있으며 중간재 수입이나 생산 공장의 해외 이전 등으로 환율의 영향을 완화시킬 수 있기 때문이라는 것이다.

Import prices fell by 0.3 percent on month to 95.78 last month. Based on contractual currency, import prices rose by 1.9 percent on month in November to 95.61.

수입물가는 전달에 비해 0.3% 감소한 95.78을 기록했다. 계약통화기준으로는 11월 수입물가는 1.9% 상승한 95.61이었다.
