A former environment minister and former Blue House aide were convicted Tuesday of abuse of power for purging state-run company executives and replacing them with loyalists of President Moon Jae-in.

청와대 내정 인사를 산하 공공기관 임원으로 임명하기 위해 환경부 산하 공공기관 임원들에게 사표를 종용한 전 환경부 장관과 청와대 비서관이 화요일 직권남용 혐의에 대해 유죄를 선고 받았다.

The Seoul Central District Court on Tuesday convicted former Environment Minister Kim Eunkyung and Shin Mi-sook, former presidential secretary for balanced personnel affairs, of abuse of power. Kim was jailed for two years and six months. Shin received a suspended prison sentence of one year and six months.

서울중앙지법은 화요일 김은경 전 환경부 장관과 신미숙 전 청와대 균형인사비서관에게 직권남용 혐의로 유죄를 선고했다. 김 전 장관은 징역 2년6월을 선고 받았다. 신 전 비서관은 징역 1년6월에 집행유예를 선고 받았다.

The court ordered Kim to be jailed immediately so she couldn't destroy evidence. "She has been denying all charges and she also lied about undeniable facts," the court said.

destroy evidence: 증거를 인멸하다
undeniable: 명백한, 부인할 수 없는

법원은 증거인멸을 하지 못하도록 김 전 장관을 선고 즉시 법정구속시켰다. 법원은 “김 전 장관이 모든 혐의를 부인해왔으며 명백한 사실에 대해서도 다르게 진술했다”고 말했다.

It was the first time a member of the Moon administration was jailed for abuse of power. The Blue House said Tuesday that it had no immediate comment on the convictions.

conviction: 유죄선고

문재인 정권에서 임명된 장관 중에서는 직권남용으로 구속된 첫 사례다. 청와대는 화요일 유죄선고에 대해 아무런 논평을 내지 않았다.

Kim led the Environment Ministry from July 2017 to November 2018. Shin served in Moon's Blue House post from May 2017 to April 2019.

serve: 일하다, 근무하다

김 전 장관은 2017년 7월부터 2018년 11월까지 환경부 장관으로 재임했다. 신 전 비서관은 2017년 5월부터 2019년 4월까지 청와대 비서관으로 재직했다.

In December 2018, the main opposition Liberty Korea Party, the predecessor of today's People Power Party, raised the allegation that the Environment Ministry created a blacklist of 24 public servants based on their political inclinations, and used it to oust some.
