Hyundai Motor's Ioniq 5 is ready for world to kick its tires
Hyundai Motor’s Ioniq 5 offers a glimpse of what cars of the future will offer beyond getting you from point-to-point.
The Ioniq 5, the first electric vehicle (EV) to be manufactured on Hyundai’s E-GMP modular platform, was introduced to the world on Tuesday. It is the first Ioniq model, Hyundai's EV brand.
The model comes in standard and long-range trims. The long-range trim can drive 430 kilometers on a single charge. Its sticker price has been set in the mid-50 million won ($45,016) range.
Hyundai Motor says the Ioniq 5 will serve as a “home away from home” with its spacious interior and many functions.
“The Ioniq 5 not only fulfills the basic purpose of an EV, but also fulfills various customer needs utilizing its space and functions,” said Chang Jae-hoon, CEO and president of Hyundai Motor during the Tuesday premiere.
“A large-capacity battery will not only enable transportation but also be used as a moving energy system. It can serve as a second home and it will become even more comfortable with upgraded autonomous driving technology."
With the removal of the drive shaft and engine from under the hood, neither of which are necessary in EVs, the interior space has become bigger.
The Ioniq 5 has a 3,000-millimeter wheelbase, the distance between the front and rear wheels, which is basically the length of the interior space. That is longer than Hyundai Motor’s big Palisade SUV's 2,900-millimeter wheelbase.
Lee Sang-yup, head of design for Hyundai Motor, explained that when the console is pushed back, the driver can get out of the vehicle through the passenger door without pretzel-like contortions, which customers in cities with tight parking spaces will appreciate.
The Ioniq 5 offers a V2L function that allows owners to use the energy from the vehicle’s battery to charge other devices such as laptops or camping equipment. It can supply up to 3.6-kilowatts of power through V2L ports under the back seat and on the vehicle exterior.
Its multi-charging system, which the company says is unique in the world, can use 400-volt or 800-volt infrastructure without additional components or adapters.
With a rapid charger, the vehicle can charge 80 percent of the battery within 18 minutes.
The Ioniq 5 is the start of Hyundai Motor’s EV ambitions, which include launching 12 models by 2025.
Mass production of the Ioniq 5 will start at Hyundai's Ulsan plant from March. Sales in Korea and Europe will start in the first half of this year followed by a U.S. launch in the second half.
Hyundai Motor wants to sell 70,000 units this year and 100,000 units annually from next year.
In Korea alone, it plans to sell 26,500 units this year.
Korean customers will be able to place orders for the long-range trim from Feb. 25. A Seoul resident can purchase the model in the 30-million-won range after subsidies and tax discounts.
Price specifics for the standard-range version will be released later, Hyundai Motor said.
