China has a "critical role” to play in persuading North Korea to denuclearize, stressed U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, while simultaneously calling out Beijing for actions that threaten regional stability during a joint press conference with the Pentagon chief and their South Korean counterparts in Seoul Thursday.

목요일 서울에서 열린 한미 외교·국방 장관 공동기자회견에서 안토니 블링컨 미 국무장관은 지역 안정을 위협하는 행위들을 하지 말 것을 중국에 요청함과 동시에 중국이 북한을 설득해 비핵화하는데 “결정적 역할”을 해야 한다고 강조했다.

On the Joe Biden administration’s goals for Pyongyang, Blinken said, “We are committed to the denuclearization of North Korea, reducing the broader threat the DPRK poses for the United States and our allies, and improving the lives of all Koreans, including the people of North Korea, who continue to suffer widespread and systematic abuses at the hands of their repressive government,” referring to the acronym for the North's official name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

블링컨 장관은 조 바이든 정부의 대북 정책목표에 대해 “미국과 동맹국들이 직면한 북한의 위협을 감소시키고 북한 주민을 포함한 모든 한국인들의 삶의 질을 향상시키려 북한의 비핵화에 전념할 것”이라고 말했다. 그는 “북한 주민들은 억압적인 정부의 손아귀에 지속적으로 광범위하고 체계적인 인권유린을 당하고 있다”고 덧붙였다. DPRK는 북한의 공식 이름 조선 민주주의 인민공화국의 두문자어다.

Blinken made the remarks in a joint press conference with Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, Korean Foreign Minister Chung Eui-yong and Defense Minister Suh Wook after the four officials held a "two-plus-two" meeting at the government complex in central Seoul earlier Thursday morning.

목요일 오전 서울 정부청사에서 외교·국방 장관(2+2) 회담을 한 후 로이드 오스틴 미 국방장관, 정의용 한국 외교장관과 서욱 한국 국방장관과 함께 공동기자회견을 하면서 블링컨 장관은 이 같이 발언했다.

Beijing has “a clear self-interest in helping to pursue the denuclearization of the DPRK because it is a source of instability, it's a source of danger, and obviously a threat to us and our partners,” said Blinken.

블링컨 장관은 “북한이 비핵화하도록 만드는 것이 중국에게도 명백히 이득이 될 것이다. 왜냐하면 북핵이 지역 불안정의 원인이고, 위험의 원인이고, 미국과 동맹국들에게 분명한 위협이기 때문이다”라고 말했다.

He noted that since virtually all of North Korean trade goes through China, Beijing is “unique” in that it “has tremendous infl uence” over Pyongyang. He urged China to “use that influence effectively” to deal with Pyongyang’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs.
