BTS became the first-ever K-pop act to perform solo at the Grammys Award on March 15, Korean time. The band recorded a video of their performance for the 2020 hit "Dynamite" from Seoul which was played during the awards ceremony. BTS failed to take home an award from the Grammys, leading fans to criticize the Recording Academy's failure to recognize the global popularity BTS has seen over the last year.

방탄소년단의 그래미 수상이 불발됨에 따라 팬들은 레코딩 아카데미가 방탄소년단이 이뤄놓은 글로벌 인기를 인정하지 않는다며 비판하고 나섰다.

The 63rd Grammy Awards was held online on Monday Korean time, after being postponed from Jan. 31 due to Covid-19. Most of the award winners were announced at the Premiere Ceremony, a ceremony held before the official event. The official awards ceremony aired on cable channel Mnet in Korea.

BTS was nominated for the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance award for “Dynamite” (2020), the band’s first all-English dance track released in August. The award was established in 2012 and recognizes new vocal or instrumental duos, groups or collaborative pop recordings. The award goes to singles or individual tracks only.

방탄소년단은 지난 8월 발매한 첫 영어 싱글 ‘다이너마이트’로 베스트 팝 듀오/그룹 퍼포먼스 상 후보에 올랐다. 베스트 팝 듀오/그룹 퍼포먼스 상은 2012년에 개설돼 듀오, 그룹, 컬래버레이션 형태의 팝 보컬이나 연주 퍼포먼스를 시상한다. 싱글이나 개별 곡만 시상 대상이다.

Although Korean classical musicians or gugak (traditional Korean music) musicians have been nominated and honored by the Grammys in the past, it was the first time for any musician from the genre of K-pop to be recognized. The Best Pop Duo/Group Performance award went to Ariana Grande and Lady Gaga's "Rain On Me" (2020).

한국의 클래식 음악이나 국악 관계자들은 그래미 후보 및 수상을 한 적이 있었지만 K팝 장르가 인정을 받은 것은 이번이 처음이다. 베스트 팝 듀오/그룹 퍼포먼스 상은 아리아나 그란데와 레이디 가가의 컬래버 ‘레인 온 미’ (2020)에게 돌아갔다.

The anticipation for K-pop’s first award was more than high. Not only did the septet nab K-pop’s first-ever No. 1 ranking on Billboard’s Hot 100 singles chart in September with “Dynamite,” the band was also invited to perform as a nominee at the awards ceremony — a first for any K-pop act.

방탄소년단이 수상하게 되리라는 기대는 높았다. 방탄소년단은 지난 9월 ‘다이너마이트’로 K팝 최초로 빌보드 핫 100 싱글 차트에서 첫 1위를 거머쥐었을 뿐 아니라 그래미 세레모니의 단독 공연자로 초대됐다. 이 역시 K팝 그룹으로서 처음이다.

The Grammys also announced a new list of 1,340 voting members of the Recording Academy in June 2019 including both BTS and its agency Big Hit Entertainment’s mastermind Bang Si-hyuk. The voting members are responsible for deciding who gets nominations and the awards.

또한 그래미는 2019년 6월 레코딩 아카데미의 방탄소년단과 빅히트 엔터테인먼트의 대표 방시혁을 포함한 1,340명의 새 투표 회원과 전문가 회원 명단을 발표했다. 투표 회원과 전문가 회원은 그래미 후보와 수상자를 결정한다.

Fans have since taken to the Grammys’ official social media accounts, namely Twitter, to criticize the Recording Academy’s decision, which they are calling “xenophobic” and “racist.”

수상 발표 이후 팬들은 트위터 등 그래미 공식 SNS 계정에 ‘외국인 혐오적’이며 ‘인종차별적’이라며 레코딩 아카데미의 결정을 비판했다.

In addition to the success of “Dynamite,” the band’s fourth full-length album “Map of the Soul: 7” released in February last year was the No. 1 selling album in the world according to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI).
