Some strange creatures have taken up residence outside the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts in central Seoul.

건물 밖에는 다섯 개의 설치물이 서 있는데, 다들 각각 다른 악기를 연주하고 있다.

For those unacquainted with the world of video gaming, they are the champions — or characters — within popular video game League of Legends (LOL) and are on display ahead of the upcoming orchestra concert “League of Legend Live: The Orchestra” set to take place on Friday and Saturday.

게임 세계에 대해 잘 알지 못 하는 사람들을 위해 설명하자면, 이 설치물은 인기 게임 리그오브레전드 (이하 LOL) 속 챔피언이라 불리는 게임 캐릭터들이다. 해당 설치물은 금요일과 토요일에 열리는 “리그오브레전드 라이브: 디 오케스트라” 콘서트를 위해 미리 설치됐다.

Sejong Center’s game-based classical music performance conveys the story and energy of the popular game LOL, reinterpreted by the hands of Korea’s esteemed performing arts center and played by the KBS Symphony Orchestra and the Seoul Metropolitan Youth Traditional Music Ensemble.

이번 클래식 음악 공연은 인기 게임 LOL에 기반한 것으로 한국의 권위 있는 공연 예술 기관인 세종문화회관이 내놓는 LOL의 이야기와 에너지를 재해석하여 KBS 교향악단과 서울시청소년국악단의 연주로 이뤄진다.

Recitals of the game’s theme songs have been held during past LOL World Championship ceremonies and other events held by the game’s developer and publisher Riot Games, but this marks the fi rst time the songs will take a classical twist.

LOL 테마송이나 배경음악 등은 지난 LOL 월드 챔피언십 행사나 라이엇 게임이 주최한 다른 행사의 일부로 공연된 적이 있으나 클래식 음악으로 단장하여 선보여지는 것은 이번이 처음이다.

What led Sejong’s CEO Kim Sung-kyu to bring the gaming world into the halls of the center typically occupied by classical music and musicals was his goal to “make the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts more approachable for people who would otherwise not visit at all.”

대부분 클래식 음악이나 뮤지컬 공연으로 가득할 세종문화회관에 김성규 사장이 게임 세계를 끌어들인 이유는 “사람들에게 세종문화회관을 더 친근하게 만들고 평소라면 방문하지 않을 사람들이 올 수 있도록”하기 위함이라고 그가 설명했다.

Since he was inaugurated as CEO in September 2018, Kim has endeavored to make the SejongCenter accessible, approachable and people-friendly. For the LOL concert, he started with the question, “What could bring the younger generation here?”

김성규 사장은 그가 취임한 2018년 9월부터 세종문화회관을 더욱 접근하기 쉽고 사람에게 친화적인 공간으로 만들겠다고 밝힌 바 있다. LOL 콘서트를 시작하기 앞서 그의 첫 질문은, “어떻게 하면 젊은 사람들은 불러들일 수 있을까”였다.

“When I asked younger people such as university students what their favorite game was, I got the answer that it was League of Legends,” said Kim.

“대학생이나 젊은 친구들을 만났을 때 제일 좋아하는 게임이 뭐냐고 물었을 때, 다들 ‘리그오브레전드’라고 대답”했다고 김성규 사장이 설명했다.

“There have been game-based music concerts held in the past, but they didn't see much success. I thought, if the Sejong Center was going to put on a concert about games, it would have to be the best concert about the best game. And we would have to go a step further so that it’s not just another game concert that’s been done before.”

그는 “게임을 기반으로 한 음악 콘서트는 예전에도 열린 적이 있지만 큰 성공을 거두지는 못 했다”며 “세종문화회관이 게임 콘서트를 연다면 최고의 게임을 다루는 최고의 콘서트여야 한다고 마음 먹었다. 흔한 게임 콘서트가 되지 않도록 다른 곳에서 시도되지 않은 것들을 시도하겠다”고 전했다.
