If everything goes to plan, the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Opening Ceremony will be held on July 23, 2021.

모든 것이 계획대로만 된다면 2020 도쿄 올림픽 개막식은 2021년 7월 23일에 열린다.

Exactly what the Games will look like remains unclear. While the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Tokyo Organizing Committee maintain that the Games will go ahead — although without any international fans — the ongoing state of emergency in Japan suggests that further disruption could come.

올림픽이 정확히 어떤 방식으로 흘러갈 것인지는 여전히 불분명하다. 국제올림픽위원회와 도쿄조직위원회는 올림픽 팬들이 없음에도 올림픽이 진행될 것이라고 주장하고 있지만 일본의 비상사태가 이어지면서 더 많은 혼란이 빚어질 것으로 보인다.

Korea is expecting to compete in at least 23 sports in Tokyo, including old favorites like archery and Taekwondo. The return of baseball to the Games is an opportunity for Korea’s favorite sport to take center stage, while new events like sport climbing open the door for a new generation of potential stars.

도쿄 올림픽에서 한국은 양궁과 태권도와 같은 오랜 인기 종목들을 포함하여 적어도 23개의 종목에 출전할 것으로 예상된다. 이번 올림픽에서 한국의 오랜 인기 종목인 야구가 다시 정식 종목이 되면서 주목을 받을 수 있는 기회가 생겼으며, 스포츠 클라이밍과 같이 도쿄올림픽에서 처음으로 시범을 보이는 종목들에서는 새로운 스포츠 스타들의 탄생이 예고된다.

Team Korea will face a tough challenge. Korea saw its Olympic glory start to fade at the 2016 Rio Games, dropping from 30 or more medals in London, Beijing and Athens to just 21. Korea ranked 8th overall in Rio, down from 5th in London.

한국은 힘든 도전을 앞두고 있다. 한국은 과거 런던, 베이징이나 아테네 올림픽에서 30개 이상 메달을 획득해왔지만, 2016년 리우 올림픽에서는 21개만을 획득하면서 주춤했다. 한국의 메달 집계 순위는 런던 올림픽 당시 5위에서 리우 올림픽 이후 8위로 내려갔다.

Korea will look to climb back up the medal table this year, but it won’t be easy — although the number of athletes isn’t finalized yet, the team is set to be markedly smaller than the 204 people Korea sent to Rio, or the 248 it sent to London.

한국은 이번에 메달 집계 순위 상승을 기대하겠지만, 쉽지 않을 것으로 보인다. 선수 명단이 확정된 것은 아니지만, 리우 올림픽 대표팀 204명과 런던 올림픽 대표팀 248명보다는 현저히 줄어들 것으로 예상된다.

How life in the Olympic bubble will affect athletes is unclear. The lack of supporters, the constant temperature checks and Covid tests and restrictions on training and movement could impact athletes’ performance — although every country will face those challenges together.

외부와 차단된 ‘올림픽 버블’ 속에서 선수들의 일상이 어떨지 불투명하다. 모든 국가의 대표단이 함께 겪을 문제지만, 응원단의 부재, 계속되는 체온 측정과 코로나 검사, 훈련과 이동에 대한 제한이 선수들의 경기력에 영향을 미칠 수 있다.

This year’s Olympians face a greater challenge than perhaps any class of athletes before them. They won’t be free to focus solely on their sport, but will also be monitored and tracked at every turn as they follow social distancing measures with the whole world watching.

올해 올림픽에 출전하는 선수들은 이전까지의 어떤 선수들보다도 어려운 도전을 직면하고 있다. 오로지 경기에만 집중할 수 없을 뿐만 아니라 사회적 거리두기 수칙을 따르는지 전세계가 지켜보고 있을 것이기 때문이다.

If done properly, the Tokyo Games could be an example of sporting cooperation prevailing against the toughest competition — exactly what the IOC has always maintained the Olympics represents.

제대로 이행된다면, 도쿄올릭픽은 국제올림픽 위원회가 말해온 올림픽의 대표정신, 어려운 시기에 맞서는 스포츠 협력을 이뤄내는 본보기가 될 수 있다.
