Swipe right and get your throat slit

Three 19-year-olds were arrested on Friday in South Jeolla for luring a girl into a relationship on a dating app and buying an insurance policy for her -- allegedly intending to kill her and claim the death benefit.

The young man who became her boyfriend for five months was a salesman of insurance policies. The group wanted the 450 billion won ($334,756) death benefit to pay for monthly installments on his Audi owned by the insurance salesman, according to the Hwasun County police on Sunday.

The three actually attempted last Friday to slit the throat of the girl, also a 19-year old, but luckily she broke away with only minor injuries.

The boys told the police that they came up with the plan before last summer, and found the girl on a dating app in May.

As soon as the insurance salesman started dating the girl, he bought a life insurance policy for her and designated himself as the beneficiary.

Originally, according to police, the young men wanted to go through with the murder quickly. But then they realized that the policy took three months to take effect.

So they waited four months, according to police.

On Friday, the boyfriend planned a romantic trip to a cabin near Mount Beaka in Hwasun County, police said.

At around 11 p.m., the boyfriend told the girl that he had hidden a present for her in the woods about 1 kilometer (0.6 miles) away. He told her she had to find it by herself.

The girl left the cabin but returned soon afterwards because it was dark outside and she was scared.

The boy convinced her to try again, telling her this was a “special event that he had prepared just for her,” according to police.

The girl was eventually able to find the spot, but there was no present. Instead, one of her boyfriend’s friends was waiting with a knife.

He attacked her, slashing parts of her body, including her neck.

But something went wrong with the knife, police said, so the boy tried to strangle her. But the girl managed to get away.

She ran down the mountain screaming for help and was rescued by a passerby near the cabin who called 911.

She was taken to Chonnam National University Hospital. Though she had cuts all over her body, no lethal injuries were found.

The police arrested the boyfriend and the friend who tried to kill the girl on site. The friend was found hiding inside the trunk of the boyfriend’s Audi.

The third friend's role was getaway driver and he was arrested later that day, police said.
