President Moon Jae-in and U.S. President Joe Biden met briefly on the sidelines of the G-20 summit in Rome on Saturday and discussed Moon’s request to Pope Francis that he visit North Korea for humanitarian purposes.

G20 정상회의 참석차 로마를 방문 중인 문재인 대통령이 토요일 조 바이든 미국 대통령을 잠시 만나 프란치스코 교황에게 인도주의적 목적으로 북한을 방문해달라는 문 대통령의 요청에 관해 얘기를 나눴다.

“The pope prayed for peace on the Korean Peninsula and said that he would visit North Korea if invited,” Moon was quoted by his office to have told Biden during their two- to three-minute encounter.

문 대통령은 바이든 대통령을 2~3분 가량 만나 “교황께서 한반도 평화를 위해 기도했고 초대 받으면 북한을 방문하겠다고 말했다”고 얘기한 것으로 청와대는 전했다.

The office added that Biden in return congratulated Moon for “making progress” on the Korean Peninsula issue.

바이든 대통령은 답례로 한반도 문제에 “진전이 있음”을 문 대통령에게 축하했다고 청와대는 덧붙였다.

The two last met in June during the G7 summit in Britain. Despite Korea’s expectations of an official U.S.-Korea summit taking place on the sidelines of the G-20 summit, an official summit did not take place as of press time Sunday.

한미 정상은 지난 6월 영국에서 열린 G7 정상회의에서 만났다. G20 정상회의와 별도로 한미 정상회담이 열릴 것이라는 한국측 기대에도 불구하고, 일요일 신문 인쇄 시작 시간까지는 공식 한미 정상회담은 없었다.

Moon met with the pontiff at the Vatican on Friday, their second encounter. Moon and the pope first met in 2018, also at the Vatican, during which time Moon extended an invitation from North Korean leader Kim Jong-un for the pontiff to visit Pyongyang. North Korea and the Vatican do not have diplomatic relations.

문 대통령은 금요일 두 번째로 바티칸 교황청에서 교황을 만났다. 문 대통령은 2018년에 바티칸 교황청에서 교황을 처음 만났고, 그때 문 대통령은 교황의 평양 방문을 요청한 김정은 북한 국무위원장의 초청의사를 교황에게 전달했다. 북한과 바티칸 교황청은 수교하지 않았다.
