Shinhan Financial Group Chairman Cho Yong-byoung has been selected as a member of the "Leadership Council," a newly established body under the United Nations Environment Program Finance Initiative (UNEP FI).

UNEP FI is a public-private partnership between the United Nations Environment Program and global financial companies set up to promote sustainable development in the finance sector. Some 450 financial institutions are taking part.

The leadership council was formed by the UNEP FI after the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) for financial companies to take more leadership and responsibility in environmental issues.

Chief executives from 19 financial companies, including Cho and chiefs from Allianz, AXA and BNP Paribas, are on the council. Cho is the only member to represent an Asian financial company among the members.

The first meeting between the council members will take place online at 10 p.m. on Nov 24.
