The Korean Sport & Olympic Committee (KSOC) appointed Yoon Hong-geun, president of the Korea Skating Union (KSU), to lead its delegation to the upcoming 2022 Beijing Olympics.

Yoon also serves as the Chairman of Genesis BBQ, the operator of BB.Q Chicken, the third largest chicken brand by sales in Korea.

KSOC said Thursday it selected Yoon considering his contribution to the development of sports in and outside of Korea. Yoon will take up his post pending board approval at a meeting scheduled for Dec. 27.

Yoon served as chairman of Seoul Squash Federation in 2005. In December 2020, he was also elected as president of KSU. His term runs until Jan. 2025.

“I fully understand the public’s concern for Korean athletes amid the Covid-19 pandemic,” Yoon said. “Taking athletes’ health and safety as the top priorities, I will give them my full support to successfully run the Olympics.”

At the Beijing Olympics, which is scheduled to run from Feb. 4 to Feb. 20 next year, events will be held in 15 disciplines across seven sports. Around 5,000 athletes from some 90 countries are expected to participate.
