Korea's Ekaterina Avvakumova and Kim Seon-su finished near the bottom of the pack in the women's 15-kilometer biathlon at Zhangjiakou National Biathlon Centre in Zhangjiakou, China on Monday.

Avvakumova finished the race, which combines cross-country skiing and shooting, in 73rd place, with Kim following in 84th out of the 86 competitors that finished the race.

Biathletes have to ski to the shooting range as fast as they can, then shoot at small targets 50 meters away while trying not to be affected by their racing heartbeat.

Avvakumova finished a cumulative ski time of 45:45.0, but a slower shooting time and a number of shooting penalties took her total time to 52:45.0. Kim finished with a ski time of 50:37.5. Although she faced less penalties on shooting, her final time was still bumped up to 56:37.5.

The gold medal went to Denise Hermann of Germany with a total time of 44:12.7. Anais Chevalier-Bouchet of France took silver and Marte Olsbu Roeiseland of the Netherlands took bronze.

Korea's Timofei Lapshin, who finished 17th at the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics, will be in action at 5:30 p.m. tomorrow in the men's 20-kilometer biathlon. Lapshin's finish at the PyeongChang Games was Korea's best-ever finish in an Olympic biathlon event.
