Samsung Electronics invested record amounts in facilities and research last year.
 
According to the 2021 annual report filed by Samsung Electronics on Tuesday, the company invested 48.2 trillion won ($39.1 billion) in facilities last year, up 25 percent.
 
The previous record was 43.4 trillion won in 2017, during a semiconductor boom.
 
Of the 48.2 trillion won, 43.6 trillion won was spent on semiconductor facilities, including the construction of two plants in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi.
 
Two production lines are currently operating in Pyeongtaek. The third line is expected to be completed by the end of the year. The company aims for six factories at the Pyeongtaek Campus by 2030.
 
Investment is likely to increase this year, with a new chipmaking plant expected to break ground in Taylor, Texas.
 
"The company plans to continue with facility investments this year to strengthen our competitiveness and meet the future rise in demand," the company said in the report.
 
 
Samsung Electronics spent 22.5 trillion won on research and development, 6 percent more than the previous year.
 
The company received 18,655 new patents last year to bring its total to 216,404. As of 2021, the company filed 8,517 patents in the U.S., second to IBM.
 
The number of employees hit a record 113,485 — 84,257 men and 29,228 women.
 
Samsung Electronics paid 144 million won in average annual salary, 13 percent higher than the previous year. The average salary stood at 154 million won for men and 115 million won for women.
 
Average payment for five inside directors ― Koh Dong-jin, Kim Ki-nam, Kim Hyun-suk, Han Jong-hee and Choi Yun-ho — was 7.7 billion won, up 44 percent.
 
Koh Dong-jin, former co-CEO of Samsung Electronics, was the highest-paid individual, receiving 11.8 billion won, 6.4 billion won of that being retirement pay.
