[CELEB] The 'human cherry' is back as Oh My Girl prepares to drop new music
Oh My Girl is set to drop its second full-length album "Real Love" on March 28. The girl group of seven — consisting of Hyojung, Mimi, YooA, Seunghee, Jiho, Yubin, and Arin — is raising expectations for another bright and cheerful tune, a style it is already well known for.
Oh My Girl debuted in 2015 with the song “Cupid,” initially as a team of eight before member JinE left in 2017. The group released songs “Closer” (2015), “Liar Liar” (2016), “Windy Day” (2016), “Secret Garden” (2018), “Remember Me” (2018), “SSFWL” (2019) and “Bungee (Fall In Love)” (2019). In 2018, members Arin, Yubin and Hyojung formed subunit Oh My Girl Banhana to drop the comical song “Banana Allergy Monkey.”
Although the girl group is considered a late bloomer — it had to wait for years to top the charts — it has slowly but consistently grown in terms of fandom size and chart performance.
A major breakout point in Oh My Girl’s career came in the summer of 2019 when it starred on Mnet’s survival show “Queendom.” The program saw six high-profile female K-pop acts compete each other by each releasing a new song on the same day, for the prize of a solo comeback show on the cable channel. Oh My Girl finished in second place, gaining publicity and momentum for its next EP. The EP’s titular track “Nonstop” (2020) released the following spring proved to be a smash hit. It became the group’s first song to top major music programs’ charts — eight times in total — and also made it on the 2021 Golden Disc Awards’ Best Digital Song list, as well as being named April 2020’s “Song of the Year” at the 2021 Gaon Chart Music Awards.
“Dolphin” (2020), another track on the EP, also became a favorite among K-pop fans. The group’s next release “Dun Dun Dance” (2021), another bubbly summer song, was a chart-topper as well.
YooA, one of the group’s main vocalists, was the first member to make a solo debut following the success of “Nonstop.” She dropped her solo EP “Bon Voyage” (2020), and the lead track of the same name was praised for its unconventional concept and sound for a K-pop idol song, as well as YooA’s signature crystal clear voice. As the song’s title in Korean translates to “child of the forest,” YooA presented a dreamlike wilderness theme which was met with positive reviews and deemed “refreshing.”
Prior to her solo debut, YooA appeared on the KBS web entertainment show “Idol Drama Operation Team” (2017), which featured seven girl group members creating a K-drama series on their own. Along with Moonbyul of Mamamoo, Seulgi of Red Velvet, Sohee of Nature, D.ana of Sonamoo, Ryu Su-jeong of Lovelyz and Jeon Somi of I.O.I, YooA formed the project girl group Girls Next Door and launched a web drama titled “Let's Only Walk The Flower Road” the same year. The series was based on the members’ personal stories from their idol careers and trainee years. The seven members wrote and acted in the series, which also featured other celebrities and K-pop stars as special guests.
YooA earned the nickname “human cherry” for her babyface and fresh complexion. She is a frequent guest on popular television shows such as MBC’s “Midnight Horror Story (Late Night Ghost Talk)” and Channel A’s “The Fishermen and the City” this year.
