Art Busan unveils world-class lineup for upcoming edition

This year’s Art Busan, one of Korea’s leading art fairs, will offer renowned artists‘ works including a painting by American pop artist Roy Lichtenstein (1923-1997) with a price tag of $5.7 million, while providing the upgraded “VVIP” programs and the newly-introduced booth design support program, according to its organizers.
The Busan-based fair, on Monday, announced the list of participants and programs for its 11th edition that will take place from May 13 to 15 at the Busan Exhibition and Convention Center (Bexco). The preview exclusively for VVIP and VIP collectors is on May 12. A total of 134 galleries from 21 countries, up from 110 galleries from 11 countries last year, will participate in the fair.
“Twenty-one galleries among this year’s 31 foreign participants have newly joined Art Busan,” Byun Won-kyung, the director of the fair, said in a press briefing in Seoul on Monday. “Among the new participants, American gallery Gray will present Lichtenstein’s “Purple Range”(1966), which will be the most expensive work at Art Busan, as well as works by Alex Katz and Jaume Plensa.”
The prestigious Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac from London, which participates in Art Busan for the third straight year, will present works by the renowned artists Antony Gormley and Georg Baselitz, Byun added. Berlin-based Peres Projects, Hong Kong-based Tang Contemporary Art, New York-based Two Palms and Tokyo-based Whitestone Gallery are among other important foreign participants. Korea's major galleries including Kukje, Hakgojae, Hyundai, PKM and Gana will also open booths at the fair.
Byun also said that, under the new program to support galleries in booth design, Art Busan will select ten galleries, which mainly represent young artists and have excellent booth design plans, and will finance their booth design costs up to 20 percent of the booth fees that they pay.
There will be also more programs for “VVIP” collectors including private tours to collectors’ homes and artists’ studios in Busan.
