Doosan Enerbility signed a wind power deal with Siemens Gamesa, a Spanish-German wind turbine manufacturer, the companies said Sunday.

The goal of the memorandum of understanding is to form a strategic partnership to develop technologies for large-scale offshore wind farms with a focus on Korea’s wind energy market, according to Doosan Enerbility.

Siemens Gamesa, one of the major wind energy engineering companies in the world, was rebranded in 2017 after a merger of the Spain-based Gamesa and Siemens Wind Power, a unit of Germany’s Siemens Energy. Siemens Energy holds a 67 percent share of the merged company.

Doosan Enerbility, the new name of Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction starting last March, began its wind power business in 2005. The company supplied offshore wind turbines for a 30-megawatt wind farm on Jeju Island and a 60-megawatt plant in the West Sea. Last year, Doosan Enerbility landed a supply deal for a 100-megawatt wind farm off the northern shore of Jeju Island. The deal was the biggest of its kind for a wind energy plant in Korea, according to the company.

The two companies held a signing ceremony in Copenhagen attended by Marc Becker, CEO of Siemens Gamesa’s offshore business unit, and Sohn Seung-woo, Doosan Enerbility executive vice president of power service sales and marketing.

“We are delighted to start to work with Doosan Enerbility in investigating a strategic cooperation in Korea,” said Becker. “We envision an excellent alliance between our two companies, fostering the Korean offshore wind industry and contributing to its expansion.”

"The cooperation between the two companies will ... contribute to revitalizing the offshore wind power ecosystem in Korea,” said Park Hong-wook, head of the power service business at Doosan Enerbility.

Doosan Enerbility ramped up production of 5.5-megawatt wind turbines last year by starting a new factory at its headquarters in Changwon, South Gyeongsang. The company plans to produce 8-megawatt offshore wind turbines this year.
