The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced Wednesday that visa-free entries to Korea will be available to travelers from Japan, Taiwan and Macau for the month of August. The decision to allow visa-free entries from these three places was reached through consultation with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced the visa-free plan in time for the Seoul Festa 2022, which will be held between August 10 and 14. With the visa-free measure, the number of foreign tourists visiting Seoul is expected to increase gradually, the city government said.

A recent surge in demand for travel to Korea has caused wait times for visas for visitors from countries like Japan of up to four weeks.

In order to relieve anxiety of Seoul citizens who may be concerned about the spread of Covid-19, the city government plans to prepare additional measures to prevent the spread of the virus for various large-scale events.

“Visa-free entries from Japan, Taiwan and Macau has given the tourism industry the opportunity to attract more tourists,” said Choi Kyung-ju, director of the Tourism & Sports Bureau of the Seoul Metropolitan Government. “Even though the visa-free entries will be available only in the month of August, we will do our best to vitalize tourism in Seoul so that tourists to the city can experience the charms of Seoul at its best.”
