A total of 21 Korean tourists are trapped on Hainan Island, as the Chinese province extends its lockdown, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Tuesday.

“A total of 18 Korean tourists are locked down in Sanya on Hainan Island, while three are in Haikou as of 7 a.m. on Tuesday,” said a spokesperson for the ministry.

Hainan initially imposed a lockdown on Sanya on August 6 to address the Covid-19 outbreak, which was then expanded to more areas, including Haikou.

“The Korean Consulate General in Guangzhou is actively communicating with the local authorities to make sure that these 21 tourists will be able to return home as soon as possible,” said the ministry.

Sanya is the southernmost city on Hainan Island, a popular tourist spot, while Haikou is the provincial capital and the biggest city on Hainan.
