Tottenham Hotspur kicked off their 2022-23 UEFA Champions League campaign with a 2-0 win over Marseille at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London on Wednesday.

Brazilian striker Richarlison headed in both goals, his first official goals in a Spurs shirt since joining the club this summer, in a scrappy matchup with the 2021-22 Ligue 1 runners-up.

Both goals came in the final 15 minutes of the match, with Ivan Perisic providing the cross for the first goal in the 76th minute and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg assisting the second five minutes later.

Marseille played the entirety of the second half with only 10 men, after Chancel Mbemba Mangulu received a straight red card for bringing down Son Heung-min on the edge of the box. The Marseille defender was the last man, and his tackle from behind clipped Son but did not get close to the ball, robbing the Korean midfielder of his chance on goal.

Son, who continued to look both frustrated and a bit rusty on the offensive, struggled in front of goal and offered little real impact in 85 minutes on the pitch. The foul from Mbemba may have stolen Son's big chance for the match, but the Korean midfielder struggled to bounce back and earned a yellow card of his own later in the game for dissent after arguing with the referee.

Son received a six from from Football.London for the game, the lowest rating among the Spurs starters alongside Hugo Lloris, Cristian Romero, Clement Lenglet and Emerson Royal.

"Following a bright performance against Fulham, Son struggled in the first half but was then in the action as he was fouled by Mbemba which saw the Marseille man sent off," Football.London said. "A frustrating night for the player."

Harry Kane, who also racked up a number of missed opportunities in front of goal, earned a seven.

With the win, Spurs take second in Group D after Sporting Lisbon beat Eintracht Frankfurt 3-0 to top the group on goal difference. The top two sides will get the chance to face each other next week as Spurs travel to Estádio José Alvalade in Lisbon to face Sporting on Tuesday.

Before that game, Spurs will be back in action in the Premier League on Saturday as they take on Manchester City at Etihad Stadium in Manchester.
