The Premier League has postponed all matches this weekend following the death of Britain's Queen Elizabeth II.

“At a meeting this morning, Premier League clubs paid tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II," the Premier League said in a statement on Friday morning.

"To honour her extraordinary life and contribution to the nation, and as a mark of respect, this weekend’s Premier League match round will be postponed, including Monday evening’s game."

According to reports the decision was not unanimous, with a number of clubs feeling that holding games and allowing fans to pay tribute to the Queen in the stadium would be more appropriate. The governing bodies of cricket, rugby and golf all decided to allow play to continue over the weekend.

For Korean players, the decision postpones Son Heung-min and Tottenham Hotspur's away clash with Manchester City and Hwang Hee-chan and Wolverhampton Wanderers visit to Liverpool.

It is also possible that further postponements could follow. The Premier League plans for games to continue next weekend, when Spurs face Leicester and Wolves take on Man City, but with the funeral for the Queen scheduled for the following Monday, there are concerns that there will not be enough police available to safely hold those games.

Queen Elizabeth II died Thursday at 96 years old after 70 years on the throne of Britain and 14 other nations. She has been succeeded by her son, King Charles III.
