Hyundai Engineering & Construction signed a 1.7 trillion won ($1.2 billion) deal to build railroads in the Philippines.

The company announced on Sept. 18 that it will build railroads for part of the South Commuter Railway Project, which aims to connect the cities of Manila and Calamba by a 56 kilometer (35 mile) long rail.

Hyundai E&C will build three out of the total nine sections of the railroad, amounting to around 32 kilometers of the total.

The specific starting date of construction was not announced, but the company said it will take some 57 months from start to finish.

Hyundai E&C said successfully carrying out its ongoing construction project in the Philippines helped it win the deal. In 2020, it inked a deal to build a 17 kilometer long railway between Malolos and Clark.

The Philippine government is encouraging various infrastructure construction projects in an attempt to enhance economic development, and the company said it aims to win more contracts from the country.
