Samsung SDI introduces latest battery technologies at IAA Transportation 2022

Samsung SDI introduced its latest battery technologies for commercial vehicles at the IAA Transportation 2022 in Hannover, Germany, which kicked off Tuesday.

The Korean battery maker opened a private booth for its customer companies to show its competency in the areas of material development, quality management and mass production capability. The company also introduced its proprietary battery technologies and solutions specialized for commercial vehicles.

Samsung SDI showcased its next-generation battery, dubbed Gen. 6, featuring higher energy density, faster charging and a longer life cycle. It will have nickel content of 91 percent with energy density improved by 10 percent, the company said, and is expected to start mass production in 2024.

The electric commercial vehicle market is one of the big markets for battery markers as they need some eight to 13 times more batteries than regular electric vehicles (EVs). The global market for electric commercial vehicles is projected to grow from 353,000 units in 2022 to 3.14 million units in 2030, with an annual growth rate of 31.4 percent, according to a report from Markets and Markets.

“Samsung SDI has made efforts to provide specialized battery solutions for commercial vehicles with differentiated technologies and best quality,” said Executive Vice President Michael Son, who is also in charge of strategic marketing for the Automotive and ESS Business at Samsung SDI. “The latest exhibition would provide chances to check out the company’s technological competitiveness, product quality and vision for a new era of electric vehicles.”

The IAA 2022 is one of the world's five largest annual motor shows that is opened alternately in Munich and Hannover. This year's event runs from Sept. 20 to 25.

Samsung SDI has been participating in the event since 2013.
