A concert hall will be built at the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts.

According to Seoul Metropolitan Government, renovations will begin in 2026 to be completed in 2028 in line with the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the center.

“The construction will be done in a way so that the performances at the center will not be completely suspended,” the government said.

Since opening its doors in 1978, the Sejong Center has been one of Seoul’s representative cultural venues, but has received criticism for its old facilities and foundation which are deemed inappropriate for orchestra performances.

The new concert hall for classic performances will house approximately 1,800 seats and be situated at the south of the Grand Theater in the main building.

“Currently in Seoul, only the Seoul Arts Center in Seocho District and Lotte Concert Hall in Songpa District have concert halls for classical performances,” the city said.

The Grand Theater will be scaled down with the number of seats being reduced from 3,022 to 2,300. The entrance of the Grand Theater will remain the same for symbolic significance.
