KT said Monday that it signed a business agreement with Seoul Robotics, a local autonomous driving start-up.

The two companies will develop an autonomous driving system using external infrastructure, a technology named “autonomy through infrastructure (ATI).”

Unlike a regular autonomous driving system that uses sensors and software embedded in vehicles, ATI technology uses sensors and computing systems installed outside the vehicle for remote control of the car.

KT and Seoul Robotics hope to jointly develop 5G mobile edge computing-powered ATI services and expand the related businesses at both home and abroad.

The companies plan to run a pilot project for an autonomous valet parking service based on ATI technology and develop other autonomous driving-related businesses together.

“KT has been accumulating core software capabilities in the mobility sector through multiple government-private or industry-academic collaboration projects,” said Choi Gang-lim, head of the company’s AI Mobility division.

KT and Seoul Robotics held the signing ceremony at KT’s office building in Songpa District, southern Seoul, Friday, with Choi and Seoul Robotics CEO Lee Han-bin in attendance.
