Vietnamese President Nguyen Xuan Phuc will make a three-day visit to Seoul from Sunday for a summit with Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol.

An official welcome ceremony will take place on Monday, followed by talks between the two leaders and only a few aides, an expanded summit meeting and a state dinner, said Yoon's presidential office Thursday.

Phuc will be the first foreign leader to make a state visit to Korea since Yoon's inauguration in May.

The two leaders are expected to hold discussions on strengthening bilateral cooperation in security, education and people-to-people exchanges, according to the presidential office. In terms of economics, they will cover areas such as trade and investment, finance, infrastructure and supply chains.

The visit comes at the invitation of Yoon as Korea and Vietnam mark the 30th anniversary of diplomatic ties this year.

Vietnam is a "key partner" in Korea's new Indo-Pacific Strategy and the Korea-Asean Solidarity Initiative, added the office.

In a visit to Cambodia last month to attend a series of summits with Association of Southeast Asian Nations, Yoon described Korea's version of an Indo-Pacific strategy centered on "freedom, peace and prosperity" and based on the principles of "inclusivity, trust and reciprocity."

Yoon also laid out a Korea-Asean solidarity initiative to strengthen cooperation and strategic dialogue with Asean countries.

Phuc's state visit is expected to "serve as an important opportunity to develop Korea-Vietnam relations into a comprehensive and strategic partnership and to further strengthen cooperation with Asean through the solidarity initiative," the office added.

Phuc, who became prime minister of Vietnam in 2016, was elected president in April 2021.

He is second in power to Nguyen Phu Trong, general secretary of the Vietnamese Communist Party.

A state visit is the highest level of a visit by a foreign leader, which usually includes more pomp and ceremony including an official welcoming ceremony with an honor guard and a state dinner.
