North Korean worker dies after fall in Laos

A North Korean worker died after a fall at a hotel in Laos, according to Radio Free Asia (RFA) on Friday.

RFA reported Friday that a North Korean worker died on Nov. 14 in Vientiane, the capital of Laos, while fixing the elevators at a hotel in the city. It confirmed the worker had been moved to a nearby hospital but passed away.

“The construction worker’s nationality was North Korean,” said the report, quoting a doctor from the hospital where the worker had been treated. “The body was moved by the construction company to the facility of a Chinese organization but what became of the body after it was moved isn’t known.”

A local source in Laos told RFA that only a few workers, possibly less than five in total, were working on the site at the time of the accident.

After North Korea’s intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) launch in December 2017, the United Nations Security Council adopted Resolution 2397, which required the repatriation of North Korean workers abroad by the end of 2019.

However, it is known that between 100 to 200 North Korean workers are currently earning remittance in Laos in the fields of construction, IT and the catering industry, according to local reports.
