Ioniq 5 SUV named Japan Car of the Year's best import
Hyundai Motor’s all-electric Ioniq 5 SUV won a Japan Car of the Year award, a first for a Korean automaker, according to the company Friday.
The electric vehicle (EV) won the 2022-2023 Import Car of the Year award after scoring higher than the BMW iX, the Land Rover Range Rover and the Renault Arkana.
Ioniq 5 ranked sixth among the 10 vehicles chosen as best cars of the year, higher than all other imported car candidates.
Established in 1980, Japan Car of the Year award names 10 Best Cars of the Year and final winners for each category after conducting test drives and receiving votes from an executive committee.
Ioniq 5’s innovative exterior and interior design as well as the 500-kilometer (310-mile) driving range on one charge were noted, according to the executive committee.
They also praised the vehicle’s paddle shift function behind the steering wheel that allows it to adjust the regenerative braking energy setting.
"Since it went on sale in Japan earlier this year, Ioniq 5 has received positive feedback from consumers who have praised the Ioniq 5's design, engineering and excellent driving range,” said Cho Won-sang, CEO of Hyundai Mobility Japan. “We will continue to strive to contribute to the future of the mobility with sincerity and humility for the Japanese market."
