While coffee capsules offer convenience they come with the issue of excess packaging.

커피 캡슐은 편리함을 제공하지만 과도한 포장 문제도 동반한다.

In an attempt to give these aluminum capsules a new breath of life, as well as pursue sustainability in a different light, Nespresso Korea presents an art exhibition created in collaboration with artist Choi Jeong-hwa.

이러한 알루미늄 캡슐에 새로운 생명의 숨결을 불어넣고 지속가능성을 색다른 관점에서 추구하기 위해서, 네스프레소 코리아는 최정화 작가와 협업해서 만든 미술전시를 선보인다.

Choi is renowned for his large-scale installation pieces, which are typically made from everyday objects, oftentimes of cheap plastic. The 61-yearold artist tends to experiment with materials such as iron cauldrons, wooden chairs, rubber shoes and even balloons.

최 작가는 주로 종종 플라스틱으로 만들어진 일상용품을 주로 사용해서 대규모 설치미술 작품을 창작하는 것으로 유명하다. 이 61세의 작가는 무쇠 가마솥, 나무 의자, 고무신, 심지어 풍선까지 포함하는 갖가지 재료를 실험하곤 한다.

Nespresso has been offering services where it collects the capsules from customers and recycles them since 2011 and jumped at the chance to turn the capsules into Choi’s artworks with the exhibition “Vita Nova” at the Platform-L Contemporary Art Center in Gangnam District, southern Seoul.

네스프레소는 2011년부터 고객들로부터 캡슐을 모아서 재활용하는 서비스를 제공해오고 있으며, 이러한 캡슐을 최작가의 작품으로 만드는 기회를 덥석 붙잡아 서울 강남의 플랫폼 엘 컨템포러리 아트센터에서 '비타 노바' 전시를 열었다.

“Vita Nova” means “new life” in Latin.

'비타 노바'는 라틴어로 '새로운 생명'을 의미한다.

“With this opportunity we wanted to prove that for the past 36 years, Nespresso has been serious about its coffee and the brand wanted to go further than just a simple campaign or event. We wanted to give the capsules that people are so familiar with in their everyday lives a ‘new life,’” said Lee Jiyoon, curator of the exhibition, during a tour on Wednesday.

"이번 기회를 통해 네스프레소가 지난 36년 동안 커피에 대해 진지했고 단순한 캠페인이나 이벤트보다 더 나아가길 바랬다는 걸 증명하고 싶었다. 사람들이 일상에서 너무나 익숙한 캡슐에 ‘새로운 생명’을 주고 싶었다”고 이 전시의 큐레이터 이지윤은 전시 투어 중에 말했다.

“When we were choosing which artist to collaborate with, Choi immediately came to mind. His artworks are permeated with history and bear so much significance as he works with materials that date back to ancient times. The fact that he collects trash and gives it a fresh new beginning is fascinating.”

"협업할 아티스트를 고를 때 즉각 최 작가가 떠올랐다. 그의 작품은 역사가 스며들어 있고 옛날로 거슬러 올라가는 재료로 작업한다는 점에서 큰 중요성을 지닌다. 그가 쓰레기를 모아서 신선한 새로운 시작을 부여한다는 게 매혹적이다.”
