The South Korean military apologized for failing to shoot down any of the five North Korean drones that flew on Monday for hours over Incheon, Gyeonggi and parts of Seoul. “We are sorry about the lack of military preparedness,” Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) Director of Operations Kang Shin-chul said Tuesday.

군 당국은 월요일(12월 26일) 경기도와 서울 일대를 수 시간 비행한 북한 드론 5대를 격추하는 데 실패한 것에 대해 사과했다. 강신철 합참 작전본부장은 “군의 대비태세가 부족한 점을 송구하게 생각한다”라고 화요일 밝혔다.

Of the five unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) that entered South Korean airspace on Monday morning, one entered northern Seoul via Paju and returned across the border after three hours. The other four were detected flying over Ganghwa Island, Incheon, and Gimpo in northern Gyeonggi before vanishing from South Korean radar.

월요일 오전 영공에 침투한 5대의 무인기 중 1대는 파주를 통해 서울 북부로 진입했고 세 시간 후 다시 군사분계선을 넘어 되돌아갔다. 탐지된 나머지 4대는 강화도, 인천 그리고 경기 북부에 위치한 김포 일대를 비행한 후 레이더에서 사라졌다.

A total of 20 warplanes, including F-15Ks, KF16s and KA-1 light attack aircraft, were deployed to intercept and shoot down the UAVs According to JCS Director of Public Affairs Col. Lee Seong-jun on Tuesday, “the situation yesterday was one where detection and identification happened continuously.”

F-15K, KF-16 그리고 경공격기인 KA-1을 포함한 20대의 전투기들이 무인기를 차단하고 격추하기 위해 출격했다. 이성준 합참 공보실장은 “어제 상황은 탐지와 식별을 계속 반복했던 상황”이라고 말했다.

“Better defensive systems are deployed near important facilities,” he added, ruling out the possibility that any of the drones could have approached the presidential office, which is located in Yongsan, without being detected. “No drone entered Yongsan airspace,” he noted.

이 실장은 주요 시설 근처에 더 뛰어난 방어시스템이 배치된다며 용산에 위치한 대통령실에 그 어느 드론도 감지되지 않은 채 접근할 가능성은 없다고 밝혔다. 그는 “용산을 비행한 항적이 없다”고 전했다.

He explained the drones could not be fired upon over populated areas and that they were so small they would disappear from radar at times. Lee said that the military is limited in its ability to identify UAVs under three meters (9.8 feet) in length, and that all of the North Korean drones were estimated to have been under two meters in length.

이 실장은 드론들이 인구밀집 지역을 지나가서 사격을 할 수 없었고 워낙 작아 때때로 레이더에서 사라지기도 했다고 밝혔다. 우리 군은 3미터 이하의 무인기는 식별에 제한이 있으며, 북한 드론은 길이가 2미터 이하인 것으로 추정된다고 했다.

President Yoon Suk-yeol has blamed the country’s military for lax defensive preparations after it failed to intercept the North's UAVs and also said that budget cuts may have been to blame.

윤석열 대통령은 북한 무인기를 차단하는 데 실패한 군의 느슨한 대비 태세와 예산 삭감을 비난했다.

Flight departures from Incheon International Airport and Gimpo International Airport, both located near Ganghwa Island, were temporarily suspended by aviation authorities at the request of the JCS. It is the first time ever that civilian flights in Korea have been disrupted due to a South Korean military operation.

합참의 요청으로 항공 당국은 강화도에 인접한 인천국제공항, 그리고 김포 공항에서 이륙하는 항공기들의 운항을 임시 중단시켰다. 군사 작전으로 인해 민간 항공기들의 운행이 중단된 것은 이번이 처음이다.

The South Korean military scrambled Air Force fighters, attack helicopters and other aircraft in an effort to intercept the drones. One of the planes deployed, a KA-1 light attack aircraft, crashed in Hoengseong County in Gangwon at 11:39 a.m.

군은 드론을 차단하기 위해 공군 전투기 및 공격 헬기 그 외 비행기들을 급히 출격시켰다. 이중 경공격기인 KA-1은 오전 11시 39분 강원도 횡성군에 추락했다.
