Coway is aiming to dominate the domestic smart mattress market with its BEREX smart mattress.
The term SleepTech is a compound of the words “sleep” and “tech,” and it is used to describe technology that aids with deep sleep. As SleepTech has improved in recent years, the smart mattress market, a new market distinct from the regular mattress market, is causing a stir within the domestic mattress market. Smart mattresses refer to mattresses that have different functions and that are considered home appliances rather than furniture, thanks to their adoption of SleepTech. Smart mattresses are attracting consumers for their use of Internet of Things (IoT) technology which features innovative functions including managing products with mobile devices, monitoring users’ sleep patterns and adjusting the hardness of the mattress.
The smart mattress market is already showing robust growth around the world, including in the United States, as a result of the increased interest in sleep wellness and preference for customized mattresses. The global mattress market is a burgeoning market, centered around U.S. SleepTech firms including Sleep Number and King Koil, and is expected to grow by 10.6 percent annually from about $1.14 billion in 2019 to about $2.1 billion in 2025, according to global market research and consulting company Grand View Research.
Coway unveiled its BEREX smart mattress last month, making a quick move to dominate the smart mattress market in Korea.
The BEREX smart mattress is a new style of mattress with air-injected sleep cells instead of springs. With 80 built-in sleep cells (for the queen-size mattress), BEREX smart mattresses can be customized to the individual needs of users as the amount of injected air can be adjusted to impact the firmness or softness. BEREX smart mattresses also guarantee a new bed-like state without deflating as the sleep cells have excellent consistency and durability. The mattresses feature several other functions including the ability to disperse body pressure by detecting and analyzing users, as well as helping to induce sound sleep.
Coway is seeking to pioneer the smart mattress market as the first company to introduce a mattress rental care service, which was well-received in 2011.
“The mattress market is expected to be reorganized into a smart mattress market that provides greater utility and ease-of-use through information technology, IoT and big data,” a Coway official said.
