Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) has bagged a 609.7-billion-won ($496.4 million) order to build two liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers for an Oceanian shipper.

The carriers will be delivered to an undisclosed shipper by Jan. 15, 2027.

With the newly-signed contract, the company has bagged orders worth $2 billion in the first month of the year, including a $1.5 billion order for a floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) facility obtained earlier last month. The total so far is 21 percent of its 2023 target of $9.5 billion.

SHI has beaten its target for two consecutive years by winning orders of $12.2 billion in 2021 and $9.4 billion in 2022. During the two years, it received a combined $12.2 billion of orders for 58 LNG carriers.

“We expect more than 70 LNG carriers to be ordered this year and vessels powered by eco-friendly fuels will be made according to environmental regulations,” a company official said in a statement. “We will also actively tap into the FLNG market, which has an unrivaled competitiveness.”
